Pa?e Six THE SALEMITE Lewis Puts Over Long Contract For Miners by Ruth Lenkoski A small part of the soft coal in dustry signed a contract with Jo'ni L. Lewis yesterday. Thei contract makes rather sweeping concessions t-) Lewis’s demands of the past few nxinths. Although the contract does fav')' the miners’ demands, Lewis expressed the hope that it would set the pat tern of agreement throughout the in dustry. Some operators merely scoffed at Lewis’ comment. The four essential points ot the contract are as follows: 1. It grants a 95 cent wage in crease, thus raising wages to fifteen dollars per day. 2. It grants a 15 cent per tosi in crease in the pension and welfare royalty fund, thus increasing t’le royalty to thirty-five cents per ton. 3. It appointed Josepiiii’.e Roche as neutral trustee witii a decidiiig forc-j in the handling of the we fare lureis of the U.M.W. 4. It provided that tiie new con tract would be effective for the com paratively long period between Jan uary 1, 1950 and September 1, 1951. The last date is significant in that it occurs during the autumn, the timq of descending cold weather, vhea Lewis can bargin more effectively. It should be noted however that those industries that have signed the con tract only comprise one lialf of one per cent of the soft coal industries.
