Todd Lived In Freedom;
Then Began Lehigh Career
Todd by Vaught
by Dr. Todd as told to
Lee Rosenbloom
We, moved to a farm in Maine
when I was 13, and the next year
five farmers put electrically charged
fences around their property.
However, it was at Freedom Aca
demy that I realized that my life
was to be dedicated to the field of
English. Our school library con
sisted of a few copies of Horatio
Alger, cook books, and four vol-
umnes of the Encyclopaedia Brit-
tanica. In the years that I attended
the Academy, from the material
available in the four volumes, I de
duced that there were twelve other
volumes and wdiat material might
be found in these missing volumes.
The chart which I used in this re
search has aided me immeasurably
in such 'courses as Shakespeare,
Chaucer, Novel, and American
Literature.
It was after I entered Lehigh
that I realized my early decision
had been the correct one. With
the idea of following in my father’s
footsteps, I intended to major in
Chemical Engineering. However,
due to various psychological tests
which showed that I had one
chance in 300 of ever passing ' a
science or mathematics course, I
changed my major to English. The
influence of these tests was minor
of course as compared to my early
interest in the Encyclopaedia Brit-
tanica.
Some years and various escapades
later, I began teaching at Lehigh.
At that time the grading system
at this institution had been revo
lutionized by an unusual event. A

English for three years, was con
ditioned after his final exam. He
took a re-exam, but upon going
back to see his teacher about his
grade, found that he had failed.
Upon hearing this cheery news, the
young man said, “That’s too damn
much , pulled out a gun and shot
his professor. After this shocking
affair, it became a policy of the
administration to think seriously
before giving students an E.
Now came a crisis in my teach
ing career. I had a student who
clearly deserved an E. The admini
stration warned me that they would
not be responsible for the con
sequences. However, true red
blooded American that I am, I saw
my duty. I gave the boy an E
and joined the army.
Some years and five citations
later, I returned to my teaching
career with renewed courage. It is
my intention now' .to remain at
Salem until I have taught all Eng
lish majors the diagram I used in
my research concerning the Ency
clopaedia Brittanica.

page eight times rather than mak
ing a disturbance by page turning.
Finally she managed to sneak out
side, turn the page, and slip back
into the library unnoticed.
“The library closes at ten”, came
the voice of Authority.

of universal theme and is gathered
from various experiences not nec
essarily related to this campus.)
