Academy St. Dr. Elizabeth Welch had a chance at real drama this summer when she aided in the capture of two long-term convicts at the Waterside Theatre near Manteo, N. C. where she was employed at The Lost Colony pageant. Dr. Welch, who had walked down by the' deserted corridor checking to see that everyone was on stage, noticed a bent-over figure in a T- shirt near the women’s dressing rooms. Thinking him to be a can teen boy, she was about to ap proach him and order him off that section of the stage property when she saw another figure join the first; both slipped into the water and waded along, climbing to the pilings. Having been warned earlier of the escape, she realized who they were, went quickly back across to the other side of the stage and warned the stage man ager and the architect. The three thought fast as they grabbed two fake guns used as stage props in the pageant. They staged a hold-up and ordered the convicts. Buckshot Harris and Harold Pace, to come out of the water with their hands up. When the convicts questioned the grounds of their arrest. Dr. Welch and her assistants realized that they had no answer. Suddenly the convicts ran behind the stage straight into the hands of the guards. The capture completed. Dr. Welch was told the details. The convicts, working the roads nearby, were playing a baseball game with a Manteo team. When a fly ball went over the stockade wall, the two convicts went after it. Seeing their opportunity to escape, they ran into the. water close by and made their way to the fort. Dr. Welch was told later that she had acted wisely in not ap proaching the two men unarmed. She described Buckshot Harris as “tall and vicious looking”. Swear ing loudly, he promised never to forget who was responsible for his capture and to repay them, added Dr. Welch.
