THE SALEMITE October 19, 1Q';| Fire Causes Excitement |n Clewell Two fire trucks answered the alarm at noon Wednesday for a fire on first floor Clewell. The fire was discovered by Caroline Hunt- ley when she noticed smoke com ing from a storage closet contain ing a vacuum clearner, mops and brooms. Sarah Sue Tisdale and Ann Merritt ran to get Mr. Gor- such who extinguished the blaze before the firemen arrived. The vacuum cleaner was completely ruined, and the walls of the closet were scorched. Dr. Gramley and Mrs. Heidbre- der talked with the fire chief about the possible cause for the blaze; it was thought to be spontaneous combustion. Diane Knott and Sue Jones, whose room is next to the storage room, were the calmest of the group of freshmen and sophomores who gathered to discuss the excite ment. Some of the girls had been in the middle of a class when the trucks arrived. Emily Gunn and Mary Lou Bridgers had struggled through a French test during all the confusion. They ran in just as the firemen were taking out the last shovel full of ashes. The fire drill the previous night had been profitable. Revised Gettysburg Address Circulated In Lit.
