As Candidate stands in the back of the auditorium waiting to “hail the conquering hero” in a good sportsmanlike manner, she is first encountered by—“the eyes.” Friends come up and express their sympathy as if Candidate had just lost a beloved relative. Friends pat her on the back and look sympathetically at Candidate with mournful eyes. “I came to as sembly just to vote for you,” one supporter whispers to her. Others pass and catch hold of her hand and squeeze it slightly. Candidate forgets her good sportsmanship for a rebeflioiis moment and Wonders why, if all these people feel so badly about her being defeated, she had lost the election at all. At lunch congratulations are sung and the victors are applauded. Candidate tries to be enthusiastic and gay, but she doesn’t fool many people. All afternoon the post mortem continues. People simply won’t leave Candidate alone. But the real friend finally comes along. “You are now officially a mem ber of the I. A. R. or some people prefer to call it the I. R. A. (I Ran Anyway).
