Miss Marsh Wins First Prize
For Essay On Bible Verse
Miss Ltlia Graham Marsh, Salem
College Alumnae secretary, was
the first winner in the Journal’s
Bible verse contest.
As first prize Miss Marsh re
ceived “The Holy Bible Designed
to Be Read As Living Literature.”
This makes her 20th Bible.
The only rule for entering the
Contest is that the contestant write
a 150-Wdfd letter interpreting one
of the Lfenten verses printed in
I Ako Ran

Then the Stee Gee president an
nounces the results and Candi
date is not among the winners.
Assembly is over. Applause and
shouting and congratulations fill
the hall. Candidate wants to be
alone, but she must be a good
loser. As Candidate stands in the
back of the auditorium waiting to
“hail the conquering hero” in a
good sportsmanlike manner, she is
first encountered by—“the eyes.”
Friends come up and express
their sympathy as if Candidate had
just lost a beloved relative. Friends
pat her on the back and look
sympathetically at Candidate with
mournful eyes. “I came to as
sembly just to vote for you,” one
supporter whispers to her. Others
pass and catch hold of her hand
and squeeze it slightly. Candidate
forgets her good sportsmanship for
a rebeflioiis moment and Wonders
why, if all these people feel so
badly about her being defeated, she
had lost the election at all.
At lunch congratulations are sung
and the victors are applauded.
Candidate tries to be enthusiastic
and gay, but she doesn’t fool many
people. All afternoon the post
mortem continues. People simply
won’t leave Candidate alone. But
the real friend finally comes along.
“You are now officially a mem
ber of the I. A. R. or some people
prefer to call it the I. R. A. (I
Ran Anyway). We have oodles of
members, and you are now one of
our group of the mighty who fell.”
the Journal.
the passage that Miss Marsh
chose was: “And it came to pass,
when the days were well nigh
come that He should be received
up. He steadfastly set His face to
go to Jerusalem.” Luke 9:51.
Miss Marsh wrote, “This means
(to me) the acceptance of the
Divine Plan and Purpose of the
earthly life of Jesus,” that His
mission was “to set the perfect
pattern ... to absolve the sin of
the world ... to offer salvation
... to teach ...”
The Christian who follows these
examples will be able “to face up
‘steadfastly’ to daily crises ... to
progress . . . and to achieve a pass
port to Eternal Life and Citizen
ship in the New Jerusalm,” con
cluded Miss Marsh.
