Page Four THE SALEMITE September 26, 1952 Adult Classes To Be Added This year, in addition to the re gular college academic courses, Salem College will offer an adult education program and some special children’s classes. The courses are designed for residents of Winston-Salem and its vicinity. Classes will begin Sept. 30 and continue through the fall semester until Dec. 16. Some of the courses are non credit, while others may be taken either for credit or not. Fees vary according to the subject, materials used and number of meetings. Most of the class sessions will be held in the evenings. There will be representative courses from nearly every depart ment on campus. Dr. Elizabeth Welch will teach a reading speed up course. Bishop Howard E. Rondthaler will teach a Bible course. From the language department Dr. Michael Lewis will conduct two classes: foreign language dic tion and elementary German. A study of the Roosevelt-Truman Foreign Policy will be taught by Dr. C. Gregg Singer. Miss Jess Byrd will instruct ad vanced composition which features practice in writing. Food prepara tion will be taught by Miss Vir ginia Hodges. The two appreciation courses of fered will be art appreciation by Mr. Edwin Shewmake and music appreciation by Miss June L. Sam- News Briefs Mr. Warren Spencer has been appointed to be in charge of solici tation of college personnel for the local United Fund Campaign. t- * Mrs. Guthrie entertained the faculty of the School of Music last Wednesday night. ^ t * * Bus service to five of the local churches will be available to stu dents beginning Oct. 5. The buses will pick students up in front of Clewed at 10:30 a.m. ♦ * * * Sue Jones has announced the new sub-house presidents and proc tors for Clewed. The sub-house presidents are Pat Marsh, first floor; Alison Long, second floor and Bessie Smith, third floor. The newly appointed proctors are Emily flail, Ann Lang, Florence Swin dell, Kathleen Duffy, Dot Morris, and Bonnie Hall. son. Other music courses will be theory of music by Miss Mary Cash and applied music, arranged through the School of Music. Miss Catherine Nicholson will teach a course in modern drama. The two main classes for child ren are held on Saturday morning. Studio art is taught jointly by Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Shew-make and creative dramatics, by Miss Eliza beth Reigner. The local Rotary Club held a luncheon in the Club Dining Room last Tuesday. After lunch the club members were conducted on a tour of Old Salem. Last week the Lions, Kawanis and Exchange clubs held luncheons on campus, A meeting of the Council of Church related Colleges of North Carolina will be held at Salem Col lege on Sept. 12. ’ ^ ^ * Seven of last year’s seniors are living near the campus. Jane Wat son, Lola Dawson and Margaret Thomas have an apartment one block from the school on East Bank Street. The four other girls, Kitty Burrus, Mary Campbell Craig, Dee Allen and Edna Wilker- son—are living down the street from the school. 4; * Elizabe'th Krauss, Salem’s foreign student from the Netherlands, will arrive next week. ^ * Handbook tests will be given to all new and old students next week. For the new students, the tests will be given Wed., Oct. 1 at 6:45 p.m. Returning day students and boarders will take the test Oct, 2 at 6:4S p.m. All tests will be given in rooms 1, 4, and 8 in Main Hall.
