Page Four THE S A L E M 1 T E fvldvember 7, 19S? 165 Salemites Are In Favor Of Bureau On Campus To Secure Jobs For Graduates By Allison Long A group of anxious girls ap proached the Salemite staff with this question “Why does Salem College not have a job-placement representative employed on cam pus These girls asked that a poll be taken from the rest of the stu dents in order to find whether or not everyone else is as interested and as concerned about this matter as they are. The poll was taken from mem bers of each class, and there was a unanimous agreement that such a person should definitely be here for the explicit purpose of giving various prospects for jobs to the graduating Salemites. The number of girls who were asked what they thought about this included 45 seniors, 40 juniors and 80 sophomores and freshmen, making a total of 165 students who feel that this is a very worthwhile project to undertake here. Such a bureau would effect the History Group Gives Banquet The new members of the Salem chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, nat ional honorary history fraternity, "were entertained at a banquet at the Forsyth Country Club on Tues day evening. A turkey dinner was served, and a short business meeting followed. The group voted to have Mrs. Heidbreder, be its delegate to the national convention which will be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico dur ing the Christmas holidays, if she V'.'islics to attend. Old members include Jane Smith, president; Jean Davenport, secre tary-treasurer; Mr. Warren Spen cer, advisor to the group; Miss l'',vabelle Covington, Dr. Minnie J. Smith, Df. Ivy M. Hixson, Mrs. Amy Heidbreder, Dr. Gregg Singer and I )rane Vaughn. Hew members are Peggie John son, Harbara Allen and Fay Fuller. seniors more than any other class, and it would certainly be extremely helpful to them in securing a job more easily when the time comes. The representative would be here only on a part time basis, but the students would still be in contact with her as much as would be needed. The following comments were made from the different students who were polled: Anne Merritt— “I thought that we already had one, but since we don’t I think that, by all means, we should have one.” Jane Schoolfield—“I think it is a wonderful idea, but in order to HewsBriefs Salem students, faculty and staff are invited to the annual bazaar sponsored by the Women’s Auxi liary of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Doors open at 4:00 p.m. and close at 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12. Supper will be served from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., followed by an “old fashioned” auction sale. * * ♦ ♦ ♦ The new faculty members were entertained by the I. R. S. Council members at a coffee Wednesday night in the Friendship Rooms of Strong. They will speak informally con cerning the various activities of their respective countries. There will be a coffee before the meeting and afterwards a dis cussion period will be held. The meeting will be held in the living room of Bitting. All mem bers and others interested are in vited to come. I he house president of Clewell and three freshmen representing the three floors in Clewell w£re in- cluded. Members of the faculty and ad ministration were Dr. Ivy Hixson, Mrs. Amy Heidbreder and Miss Eileen Smoke. Dr. Gramley and Miss Blandina Diggers were unable to attend the meeting. Thirty questionnaires relating to the effect that Rat Week activities had on academic work were sent to the faculty members. The re sults of the questionnaires will be given to the permanent Rat Weel committee. The group voted to have the three freshmen who attended the evaluation meeting plus three others elected by the Freshman Class to serve as the Rat Week committee to plan the activities for next fall.
