Through joint desig nation of Dr. Gramley and Charles F. Carroll, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, she represents i Salem now as a member of the i Advisory Council on Teacher Edu- j cation. ^ Also she has been named to two committees by NCEA president E. N. Howell. These are the Plan ning Commission and the Future Teacher Advisory Committee. By Jane Smith T’ve been at Salem since 1915. [Now isn’t that a sight?” Miss Essie told me laughingly. I agreed I that it was quite an achievement.! ‘‘A month or two at a time is the I (longest I’ve been away from here hoo.” ■■ ■ ' Miss Essie — nobody ever calls ;|her Miss Shouse — is from Rural^ !‘Hall. Her apartment in Sisters 9 House is filled with antiques and I pictures of her family. Miss Essie ilhas a number of nieces and nep- ihews of whom she is quite proud, iAlmost every Sunday afternoon her ^apartment i« filled with relatives iand friends. | , “I love children and college -rgirls,” Miss Essie told me. She [must love college girls to put up with all she does. One afternoon last fall a group of women were coming out to tour Sisters House. Miss Essie came in our living room and said, “Now girls, Marie and I have cleaned this room thoroughly. Please now, try to keep it clean for just two hours.” We probably didn’t either. But we all know that when a drawer gets broken or we have a leaking faucet in our rooms. Miss Essie will see that it gets re paired. Anybody who works from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., as Miss Essie does, should enjoy praise. But not Miss Essie—she is so modest that we could hardly get her to have her picture made. She turns praise aside with a shy remark that she enjoys working. I believe she does. from that homecooking . .. . Jo seeing Winston for just four hours . . ; Beauty’s Tyrone . . .
