Critics disagree about the value of Menqtti’s work in the operatic field, but one truth is generally admitted. The Medium proved that opera could be successful outside the Metropolitan Opera Organiza tion. Life magazine comments that the opera is “an amalgamation of beau tiful music and frightening melo drama.” The New Yorker maga zine says, “Gian-Carlo Menotti writes plays in which the actors sing their speeches instead of talk ing them.” Some of the outstanding features of the production are a simple plot, well-sustained suspense, Eng lish lyrics, and a single set.
