C., Friday, March 6, 1953 Number 18 McNeely Is Stee Gee President « •' ^ * k . . 1 %Jlt I Other Heads Parents* Day To Be Held On Saturday The Freshmen and Sophomore classes will entertain their parents on a Parent’s Day Saturday, March 7. The day will officially begin at 2:00 p.m. with registration of par ents in Clewell reception room. From 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. students, parents, and faculty are invited to an informal tea in Strong Friend ship rooms. Clewell and Strong will have open house from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Dinner will be served to parents and their daughters at 6:00 in the club dining room. At 8:00 in the evening a program of entertain ment to which all students, dates, parents, and faculty are invited will be given in Old Chapel. ' ' Gertie Johnson, Ella Ann Lee, and Mary Ann Raines are in charge of the entertainment pro gram which has been christened “Showtime Salem Style”. The theme is on entertainment of four periods: an 18th century drawing room, a 19th century Showboat, a roaring 20’s speak-easy, and 20th century Broadway stage. Rooney Barnes will narrate. Ella Ann Lee and Martha Thornberg are pianists. Diane Huntley is the “all-time Gaylord Ravenal.” Mary Ann Raines and Nancy Florence will dance their famed Charleston. Peggy Jlawkins and Emily Baker will appear as Marge and Go\ver Champion. Tinkle Millican will do an Apache dance. Emil}^ Howell will give her imitations via re cords. Sally Knight and Ernie Kapp will render selections from “Showboat”. A1 “Temple” Jolson will call her “Mammy”. Nancy Florence and Ann Ed wards will present a musical inter lude via piano. Nancy Proctor will remind us that “You Can’t Get A Man With A Gun” and Carolyn Spaugli is “Gonna Wash that Man Right out of her Hair”. The finale to all this talent will be a chorus line with Mary Alice Ryals, Bunny Gregg, Mary Ceile Flowers, Dayle Dawson, Betty Riddle, Toddy Smith, Phyle Stiaret and Jody Meilicke. Mr. Louis B. Daniel will speak on behalf of the parents at dinner time. Dr. Gramley will speak for the college; Bobbi Kuss and Nellie Ann Barrow for the sophomore and freshman classes respectively. Behind the scenes of this big day are Gertie Johnson, Mary Ann Raiiies, and Ella Ann Lee in charge of entertainment; Ann Mixon and Sally Reiland working on lighting, Margaret Blakeney on costumes, and Rose Ann Worth ington on props. Joy Dixon, Margi Hartshorn, and Sara Outland are working on namecards for the parents; Bobbi Kuss on the pro gram. Both name cards and pro grams will be done in Salem’s colors. Both ■ classes are indebted to Mrs. Heidbreder, Dr. Gramley, Dr. Hixon, Miss Marsh, Miss Roberts, Mrs. Cummings, and Mrs. Tesch for their help on Parent’s Day plans. Nellie Ann Barrow and Bobbie Kuss are in charge of stu dent arrangements. This is the second annual Par ent’s Day. It is different from last year’s in that it is being held jointly by the Freshmen and So phomores. Bobbie is the new secretary and Alice is the new president. Civic Music Presents Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Concert At Reynolds Auditorium The Winston-Salem Civic Music Association presented the Indian apolis Symphony Orchestra in a concert last Wednesday night at Reynolds Auditorium. The concert Was the fourth in the Civic Music Series for this season. The orchestra was directed by Fabien Sevitzsky, and featured Soph Victory Causes Tie Tuesday night the sophomores threw the basketball championship into a three-way tie by trouncing the freshmen 48-34. There was no doubt as to the outcome of the game after the first quarter at which point the victors led by a 19-6 score. During the second quarter the sophomores continued to pour on the steam. Later the freshmen made a slight rally, but soon the sophomores had everything under control again. For the winners tall Allison Long once again led the way as she threw in 22 points from her pivot position. Jean Currin gathered 11 and Louise Fike contributed 10 to the cause. For the freshmen, Margaret Rai- ford sank 13 points and Polly Lar kins had 42 for her night’s work. Francine Pitts played a brilliant game at guard coming out with numerous rebounds. Sidney Foster, rising young pianist, as soloist. 2,000 Attend Considered by critics as being one of the outstanding symphony orchestras of the country, the In dianapolis Symphony, now in its 23rd year, was well received by the more than 2,000 Civic Music pat rons. The program opened with the Bach Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, followed by Gershwin’s Con certo in F, for Piano and Orches tra. Mr. Foster was featured as soloist and was called back for two encores. He selected first, “Perpetuum Mobile”, by Weber, followed by a “below the border” selection by David Guion of South Carolina. Takes Three Encores After intermission, the orchestra presented Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F minor. The audience’s applause repeatedly brought Mr. Sevitzsky back and the group took W S S F Increases W. S. S. F. Chairman, .Mice McNeely, reported that $125 had been contributed to the fund-rais ing campaign last Monday night. Most of the pledge money had not come in and students are urged to get it in as soon as possible. The drive will continue through this week and into next week, if necessary. Solicitors will continue to visit students so that those who have not yet pledged may do so. three encores. Alice McNeely of Mooresville was elected president of the Stee Gee and Bobbi Kuss was chosen secretary of the group in assembly Tuesday. On Thursday Alison Britt. Mary Lou Whiteheart, and Mary Bam- balis were chosen as on-campue vice president, off-campus vice president, and treasurer of the Student Government respectively. Alice is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. McNeely. Majoring in sociology-economics and minoring in French and religion, Alice has been active in many school activ ities. She now holds the office of president of the junior class, secre tary of the Y. W. C. A., and a marshal and a Scorpion. Bobbi, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kuss, is from Allen town, Penn. She is now the presi dent of the sophomire class and is active in the A. A. and in the Art Club and other campus jobs. Rising senior, Alison Britt from Murfreesboro is president of the Art Club, a marshal, and the junior class reporter for the Salemite. Alison, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Britt, is an English major and historj' minor. The new off-campus vice-presi dent, Mary Lou Whiteheart is the daughter of Mrs. R. E. Whiteheart of Winston-Salem. Mary Lou is a math, major and primary edu cation minor. She is vice president of the junior class, a marshall, and a member of the honor society. Mary Bambalis, also from "VVin- ston-Salem, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George P. Bambalis. She graduated from the Academy and is a sociology-economics major and history minor. These Student Government offi cers will take office along with the other heads of organizations who will be elected in the next few weeks. The installation of new of ficers will take place in assembly Tuesday, March 31. Katharin Green To Present Piano Recital Next Monday' Miss Katharin Green, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Green of Katharin Green Midland will be presented in her senior recital by the Salem College School of Music at 8:30 p.m. Mon day, March 9, in Memorial Hall. While at Salem, Katharin has studied piano under the instruction of Dr. Charles Vardell and Mr. Hans Heidemann. Her Monday recital program is as follows: Sonata in E flat Major....Haydn Allegro Adazio Presto Three Etiudes Chopin F minor A flat Major F minor Scherzo in B minor Op. 20 Reflets dan I’eau Debussy La soiree dans Grenade Debussy Concerto in A minor Op. 53 Schumann Allegro affetuoso .Andante espressivo Allegro-Cadenzo Allegro Molto Katharin has been a member of the Chorale Ensemble and enjoys reading and knitting.
