Blind dates are justly famous for either being ex treme successes or else, dismal fail ures. They have a quality for never being half-anything. A woman never knows how to dress, what to wear, how to act or what to expect. She can’t know whether to be the grand lady in her elegent best or to be the sweet young thing in a simple frock. Should she be brilliant and witty or kjuiet and demure ? Would it be better to be cool and formal or warm and friendly; good sport or grand dame ? Who knows ? He might turn out to be a,,drip anyway, then again he could be the one you have dreamed about. A good rule is to prepare for the best but to expect '^ibsolutely nothing. JAN. 3: Went to church at Marble Collegiate Church to hear Dr. Peale. In afternoon dur ing long wait in Penn Station for naturally late train. Managed to get porter in nick of time to board train, and after dinner, settled our selves with pillows to sleep all the way to Greensboro. But no, not with the young ladies returning to a Virginia col lege who were shouting, squealing, and incessantly tramping up and down the car! Of course, our Salem girls would have let those who wished to sleep do so in peace and comparative quiet. Slept fine between Lynchburg and Greensboro, changed to the rough Winston-Salem train, and arrived at 4 a.m., only an hour late.
