October 1, 1954 THE SALEMITE Page Five Here’s The Score By Sissie Allen and Jo Smitherman Scho’ol is now in full swing. Sep tember is over, the nights and early mornings are cool, and some of the leaves are beginning to turn. On the campuses of most colleges and universities thoughts are centered on football. Last week-end proved to be one for upsets as far • as southern teams were concerned. Few people were surprised that Carolina beat State, but many were disappointed to hear that Wake Forest lost, l4-0, to., V. P. I. The Duke supporters didn’t expect their team to beat Penn State by 52 points, but the happiest crowd were those who pulled for Davidson, The upsets of the week were South Carolina defeating Army and Flo rida beating Georgia Tech. Those were hard to believe. This Week-end will see Duke versus Tennessee in what should be a thriller. Wake Forest against State at Wake Forest, and Carolina traveling to New Orleans to play Tulane. No home game at David son. And if you’re a baseball fan you’ll want to get near a TV set this_ week-end for the crucial World Series games. Leo Durocher’s New York Giants will have a gigantic job to perform if they beat out the Cleveland Indians, winners in the American League over the de fending champs, the Yankees. A REMINDER: (in case you would like to be planning ahead). The Wake Forest-Maryland foot ball game will be played here in Winston-Salem (Bowman Gray Stadium) on Saturday afternoon, October 9. That’s next week-end —and the game is expected to be a sell-out! ON THE LOCAL FRONT (meaning Salem campus), the A. A. is hoping that the girls will get so much football in their blood that they will rush out in mobs to hockey practice. Wouldn’t you like to be able to boast to your foot ball friends that you play halfback or fullback on the Salem team? Hockey is Salem’s equivalent to football—and it’s lots of fun. Prac tice starts at 5:00 Monday, Oct. 4, on the athletic field. The sopho mores will be determined to defend the title they won last year as freshmen. Why don’t you help* your team take the tournament this year ? Remember—it takes 3 prac tices to play on yoir class team and 5 to be eligible for the varsity. TERESA WRIGHT says: “Up to 16, my knowledge of acting had been gleaned from seeing movies. When I saw my first professional play, that was it: I only wanted to act. I got into high school plays, wrestled props at Provincetown, understudied, sat for months in producers’ reception rooms. One rainy night, sick with a cold, I read for a good role, and got it!” Start smoking Camels yourself! Make the 30-day Camel Mildness Test.
