Pa^ Four THE SALEMITE April 29, 19S^ Leaders Announce New Councils, Committees Immediately after the election of the major officers last month the new organization heads began to appoint councils or to arrange to have representatives ,e 1 e c t e d by classes and other groups. To acquaint you with the stu dents who will be publishing, plan ning, organizing, directing, and ser ving next year, here is a summary of the councils and committees ap pointed up to this time. , The Athletic Association With new president Betty Mor rison conducting, the A. A. Council elected Nellie Ann Barrow vice- president, Ann Miles treasurer, and Cookie Kolmer secretary. The council is composed of Dhu Jennette, Katherine Oglesby, Mary Curtis Wrike, Ann Crenshaw, Jane Langston, Mary Hadley Fike, Jean 5tone, Temple Daniel, Brenda Go- erdel, Jo Smitherman, Sissie Allen, and Nancy Russell. Seven of these are newcomers. Future Teachers of America Mary Mac Rogers was recently chosen president. Emma McCotter is the new veep; two sophomores, Carol Cooke and Betty Byrum, were picked to be secretary and treasurer, respectively. Inducted into F. T. A. were Katherine Scales, Kate Cobb, Mary Walton, Sarah Vance, Kay Will iams, Sarah Smothers, Margaret Hogan, Harriet Harris, Pat Ward, and Rose Tiller. Others were Judy Graham, Ann Knight, Jane Shiflet, Marcia Stan ley, Bren Bunch, Nancy Gilchrist, I'oni Gill, Betty Baird, Carol Cooke, Rachel Ray, Mary Avera, Pat Flynt, Ann Darden Webb, and Betty Lou Walker. All these girls are sophomores who plan to be come teachers. ' Lahlings The new Lablings president, Sara Katherine Huff, a science major from Pulaski, Va., reports that her organization has not yet chosen its officers for the 1955-56 year. Sights and Insights Staff Martha Thornburg has chosen the new Sights and Insights staff. The three major staff offices have been filled by Mary Mac Rogers (associate editor), Jo Smitherman (assistant editor), and Mary E. McClure (business manager). Photography editor will be Agnes Rennie; her assistant, Julia Parker. Sissie Allen, Linda Chappel; Day Student editor is Betty Jean Cash. Brenda Goerdel wdl serve as art editor; Rose Dickinson is her as sistant. Assistant in the business department is Celia Smith. Typists will be Libby Norris and Susie Glaser. Mr. Britt will con tinue to be faculty adviser. Young Women’s Christian Association The Y Council, headed by Mary Lou Mauney, elected Agnes Ren nie vice-president, Kay Williams secretary, and Peggy Ingram treas urer. The council members are Jane Langston, Nancy Russell, Mary M^c Rogers, and Emma McCotter from the senior class; juniors are Ann Knight, Nell Newby, Sujette Davison, and Ann Darden Webb; rising sophomore representatives are Bootie Spencer, Nancy Walker, Dhu jennette, and Miriam Quarles. The day students will be repre sented by Suzanne Delaney and Martha Ann Bowles. The Pierrettes Julia Parker’s Pierrettes will thrive with Barbara Durham serv ing as business manager and Emily Baker, Toni Gill, Judy Graham, Terry Harmon, and Patsy McAuley composing a production board. Marshals The present junior class elected six marshals to serve with chief Louise Pharr during the 1955-56 year. The rising juniors chosen were Joan Reich, Nancy Blum, Rose Tiller, Jeanne Eskridge, Toni Gill, and Jo Smitherman. v The Lecture Committee Studen/ members appointed to the Lecture Committee for next year are Emma McCotter repre senting the seniors, Jo Smitherman the juniors, Betty Webster the so phomores, Ann Tesch the day stu dents, and Carol Jenkins the aca demy. Emily McClure, Salemite editor, is automatically a member; Marian Myers is representative-at-large. Townspeople on the committee are Mrs. Claude Strickland and Mrs. Eunice Ayers. Faculty members, in addition to chairman Jess Byrd, are Miss Kirk land, Mrs. Pyron, Miss Collett, Dr. Spencer, Mr. Shewmake, Dr. Lewis, Mr. Sawyer, and Mrs. Henry Blackwell of the academy. Students To Qive Bcincluet Over one hundred and fifty For syth County secondary and elemen tary principals and teachers will be guests at the annual banquet given by the student teachers of Salem College. The event takes place on May 5 at 6:00 p.m, in the club din ing room. Those who have helped in any way with the Salem College stu dent-teacher and psychology obser vation programs are invited to join in an evening of fellowship with the Salem faculty. Although there will be no formal program. Dr. Gramley, Dr. Welch, head of the department of educa tion, and Ann Edwards, president of the Future Teachers of America organization, will make several short remarks to the guests in ap preciation for the co-operation they have shown in helping the college with its education and psychology programs this year.
