All of the girls pre.sent are members of either city or county high school senior classes. The guests were told about the olub's $300.00 scholarship offered each year to a Salem day student. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of the student’s high school academic record. After the coffee, the visiting airls veere taken to Old Chapel where they viewed one act of the Pierrettes’ production of the Skin of OiMir Teeth. Beyond ihe Square {C0ntinu««i fr«m two) tion as Premier is still raging. ALso, there is conflict in the As sembly as to what method should be used in the next election. The three suggested methods are; Proportional representation, man- for-nian voting, and the alliance system. The latter method is the one now in effect—election by de partments. For the parties and Deputies choosing the most desir able method is a matter of life and death. For example, the Com munists now have 94 seats, and the experts believe that under the pre sent system the Communists would increase their seats to 160 in the ne.xt election. Now i!:e Assembly has voted to put off debate entirely until the government has drafted a new map of electoral districts. This is liable to take months since every deputy’s seat IS at stake. It seems as if anything that the .■\ssembiy tries to do does not make much headway due to the different factions within the group. Agnes Sams Chosen To Be Salernos Maid of Cotton. By Ann Fordham There was a knock at the door. The voice of I. R. Ann Camp bell, said, “Agnes, are you there Agnes Sams, white faced and trembling, scrambled under the bed. She was panicked. Had the I. R. S. seen her pajamas under her rain coat at breakfast ? Finally, with shaking hands, Agnes managed to open the door. Imagine her surprise when she heard Ann say, “Agnes, you are Salem’s Maid of Cotton.” In a matter of minutes, Agnes was surrounded by excited girls. All were madly planning what Agnes would do on the Maid of Cotton world tour, should she win the Memphis contest, December 27th and 28th. Even if Agnes had not been surprised speechless, she could not have gotten a word in edgewise. And to further add to Agnes’ ex citement, her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Fuller Sams, Jr. of Statesville, called “just to find out if Agnes knew anything new”—and they knew nothing of the contest! The strange thing is that our Swan seems to think she is the “ugly duckling.” Immediately, she began saying, “My hair, my weight, my legs! I’ll have to lose ten I pounds. And how can I reduce j these ankles ? I have the longest i neck!” j Talented as well as beautiful, Agnes is a sophomore music major. She was elected by the May Court her freshman year and again this year. The National Maid of Cotton is chosen on the basis of poise, beauty, background, and person ality. Salem has chosen an able candidate for the honor. And what if Agnes does win? She will make a year long tour of the world as a representative of the United States Cotton Industry. She will be given a car, and the foremost designers of Paris will present her with a vast wardrobe Agnes, of cotton clothes. W e at Salem are proud that Agnes \vill represent us. And know success her. our Maid that all of and good of Cotton, can our wishes for luck are. behind YOU’LL BOTH GO FOR THIS CIGARETTE! oit WINSTON ■ Men and women both want real flavor in a cigarette — and Winston’s really got it!
