Historians Chat With Davis The speaker for the installation meeting of the Phi Alpha Theta which met last Monday night was Mr. Chester Davis of the Winston- Salem Journal-Sentinel. After relating instances in his career in which a knowledge of history had been an aid in helping him better understand several situ ations, Mr. Davis then led a dis cussion concerning this subject. The four new members who were initiated were two Juniors, Martha Jarvis, Becky Hinkle. Mr. Foster Farley, instructor of history at Salem and Dr. Frank Albright, curator of Old Salem, Inc. The art exhibit from now until December 18 is an exhibition of thirty paintings of New England Jane Carter Leaves For New Position After two years at Salem, an other Salemite has transferred— only this one will be hard to re place. She wasn’t really a Salemite— although we would like to have claimed her. Yet she was often seen cooling a cup of coffee at Tom’s anxiously awaiting the re sults of May Court elections, ap plauding the efforts of a Pierrette production, or even cheering in a faculty-student softball game. Then too, she looked like a Salemite — or at least, like the I. R. S. would like for all Salem- ites to logk, for she was always neatly dressed in the best of taste as well as the latest fashion. She was particularly well suited for her job—that of making Salem girls smile. For many of you, she was just about your first taste of Salem, for she posed you ,for your freshman publicity picture saying, “Remember, this is for your home town paper.” She also made you smile for numerous pictures in the Winston- Salem Journal and Sentinel, for she made certain that people in town knew what was happening on Salem’s campus. And it was certain that if you couldn’t find her seated by the door in the public relations office, she was leading some stray photo grapher or reporter around campus. But last week she assumed the official reporter role herself, for Miss Jane Carter accepted a posi tion as assistant Woman’s Editor for the Winston-Salem Journal. —Judy Graham subjects. The subjects range from well-known tourist attractions to little known, by way beauty spots or historic monuments. A study of these paintings is like a trip through New England. There are water front sketches, campus, farm, and street scenes, and even a painting of Berkshire Lovers’ Leap. Washington Street, Duxbury by Glenn MacNutt is a quiet village street lined with square white houses and big oak trees. There are two young girls on bicycles and I felt as if I were peddling easily along with them. , I took a poll of the music stu dents passing the exhibit and the most popular painting was Smutty Nose Island by William Barss. It is a dark, gloomy picture of a lonely gray fisherman’s shack beside a white capped sea. The infinite de tail of the sea reeds in the paint ing appealed to most of us. Eleven more days until we get out and eleven more days to go see this reflection of the sights which New England gives its visitors. il@ws Briefs The Board of Trustees met at noon today for reorganization pur poses following the election of six new trustee members at a recent synod of trustees in November.
