My “ Roomie ”
Pleases Me
Heads are bowed.
“Martha, w'e’ve . got to decide
about roommates for next year.”
“Yeah.”
Silence.
“Well, I’m satisfied.”
“Me, too.”
“Now say so if you aren’t.”
“You too. I won’t be hurt.”
“I’m satisfied.”
“Me, too.”
Grins.
“1 hat’s the way it always is,” ;
says Betty Craig. “That’s the way
we always decide to room together
another year. This is our third.”
“Why?”
“Well, nobody else could take all
my kidding. And we think the
same way. She’s a mama to me.
Gets me to class on time, meals ’
on time, and knows my moods,” i
Martha McClure answers. |
This is why these two juniors
have stayed together since they |
1 entered Salem. And the others ? j
I When questioned about her room- j
mate of three years, Marcille Van
Liere, Marian Neamand’s eyes lit
up as she answered, “She’s so
sweet. She never complains!”
Marian says “we always take room
ing together for granted,” and
“we have the same tastes in room
decoration.”
Juniors Nancy Willis, a history
major, and Beth Taylor, a math
major, do not have the same close
friends, nor outside interests, nor
much in common. Nancy says,
“We just get along so well to
gether.’
Jean Smitherman and Martha
Goddard live in two different
V' nrlds during the day. Jean writes
and keeps up with four English
courses while Martha practices
piano, orchestration, and voice. “At
night,” says Martha, “we’ve got
nlenty to talk about. And we’re
both in the play this fall. We’ve
got the same circle of friends, too.
Tn the senior class are Jane
Rridges and Jeane Humphrey who
“really don’t know, don’t have any
reason for rooming together for

same interests or tastes. Jane is
an art major and Jeane is a French
major.
However, Mary Archer Blount
and Betsy Smith are both chemis
try majors and the only ones in
the senior class. “But that’s not
why we stayed together,” laughs
Marj' Archer. “The two messiest
seniors just decided to stick to
gether,” added Betsy.
Art Mews
Mr. Edwin Shewmake, head of
the Art Department announces a
new exhibit by Kenneth Ness which
is on display in Music Hall.
Mr. Ness is the acting head of
the Art department at the Univer-
I sity of North Carolina. Most of
! his previous training was at the
, ,\rl Institute in Chicago.
I The paintings are mostly work-
[ ing in abstract hut there is still a
i surrealistic tendency about them.
One of the best, perhaps, is “Small
Boy with Bubble Gulp, Kite and
Yo-Yo”. The painting seems to he
entirely abstract but upon close
examination, the viewer can detect
the clever way^ in which the artist
has combined his subject.
