isjovember 22, 1957 THE SALEMITE Page Three Hysteria ... (Continued from page two) the U. S. But this is all right. The planets will wait and weTl all be placing billboards on the moon in due time. The best course of action the U S. could take would be to con tinue work on our missile program, ^ but at the same time, to put in creased stress on the non-scientific areas, the humanities. These latter areas contain our real strength against Russia^ for Russia in her unbalanced power has no defense against their appeal to a people whose interests are stiffled by the urge for scientific progress. Russia cannot meet this challenge — but she can certainly meet and return our bombs. —Ruth Bennett and Beverly Hietikko House Board Has Judicial Authority x^t a meeting of all House Presi dents on last Wednesday night Martha Duvall was elected Chair man of the newly formed House Presidents Board. The general purpose as well as the area of juris diction to be designated to the board were established. For several years, the weekly meetings of Student Council have been concerned mainly with mat ters of minor violations, leaving a rather small amount of time in which to consider campus wide problems or areas in which general improvement may be made. The responsibility of deciding penalties to be given for all violations listed on the automatic list as well as overuse of evening engagements, and overnights has been shifted to the House Presidents Board. The group will also consider other cases of more serious nature. The Presi dent of Student Council and Chair man of the Board will meet each Monday to determine which cases will be considered by the House Presidents Board and which ones by Student Council. Any decision rendered by the former can be ap pealed to Student Council for fur ther consideration by a student having legitimate reasons. Although only in its beginning stages, the House Presidents Board can grow into a responsible and important part of Student Govern ment. It can serve as a coordinat ing body of all the dormitories and will give the House Presidents an opportunity to discuss various prob lems arising among girls within the dorms. It is the hope of Student Council that the body will not concern itself only with punitive matters but can initiate projects for im provement of dormitory living. At present, the group is discus sing the Christmas Fund, as well as dorm functions for the Christ mas Dance weekend. News Briefs The Moravian Candle Tea will be open to the public this year for three successive days: Thursday, December 5, through Saturday, De cember 7, from 2:00 until 9:00. The ad mission for students is 25c, and SOc for adults. A member of the Lost and Found will be at each door of Memorial Hall five minutes before each chapel program to collect articles found. They will also have a list of found articles. Each Wednesday, from 1:15-1:45, the Lost and Found will be, open in the Student Center.
