Page Four THE S A L E MITE Cuban Fight For Freedom (Continued from page two) democratic system in Cuba. Poli ticians, merchants, manufacturers, and the people have joined in a protest which has been violently crushed by military power. A military base has been estab lished in the forests and mountains of the Sierra Maestra, with the object of overthrowing the regime, by a former student leader, Fidel Castro Ruiz. The civil and fundamental rights gauranteed in the constitution have been flaunted by the dictator. There is no freedom of the press. The government insists that official news is the only true news. The Universities have been closed and student leaders forced underground. The attempt to exercise the right to freedom of speech has ended in more assassinations. The economic effects of the policy of terrorism have been far reaching and add to the suffering of the people. Daily acts of violence continue to occur in all parts of Cuba. Echeverria was killed because of the part played by students in broadcasting news during the March 3 attack on the presidential palace. Before his death he wrote a testament to the people of Cuba. “Our action involves great risks for us all, and we know that. We do not disregard the danger. We do not seek it, but neither do we shun it. 1 act simply to accomplish what is my duty . . . We believe that the moment has come to fulfill our duty. We are convinced that the purity of our intention will bring us the favor of God to gain the rule of justice in our country.” Many young people remaining in the Sierra Maestra continue to bear arms against the dictatorial regime. They have demonstrated that they have the necessary courage to de fend their ideals of patriotism, democracy, and human dignity. We’re not passing this information along as a public service. Actually we’re up to the same old game. You see, popcorn makes most people thirsty. Fortunately, when most people get thirsty they hanker for the good taste of Coca-Cola. Wouldn’t 2/OM'like some popcorn right now? C’mon now, wouldn’t you?
