THE S A LEMITE February 21. 195g Past andFutureEventftil for AtMeticAssociation Cheer Leaders, Players: Rise And Combine The password is “swish,” and I want to be sure the word gets around! The reason so few have come to basketball practice must be that lots of people are plan ning to be spectators at the tour nament beginning Tuesday. The juniors have elected a group of cheerleaders. This, to me, is a pattern that every class should follow. Cheerleaders and spectators will be needed to yell at their guards to keep away from the basketball that Pat MacMillan raises over her head and tauntingly holds there until her long arms push it to wards the basket. At least Fresh man manager Lou Lyles doesn t have to worry about Pat—she 11 be playing at the other end of the court. Fans should be at the games to see that their forwards have en ough spirit and pep to make every goal they shoot when playing against the sophomore guards. When these guards get the ball they hustle it up to their forwards, before many people know where it is. A different kind of cheering is required to keep the play running smoothly and calmly so that there will be fewer fouls. Miss Palmer, wdio has been reading Sports Illu strated, has learned a .deadly foul shot. Martha McClure shoots similarly to this, but after learning a few other secrets, she doesn’t miss the one she sometimes misses. Of course, her free throws are shot all over the floor. Exactly opposite of Martha Mc Clure is Anne Joyner, the sopho more basketball manager. She hardly ever stands still for a shot. Quickly snapping the ball up, she twists around to shoot from many places with very positive results, while Mary Louise Linberger shoots set shots around the key hole. It appears that Anne has been working w'ith her team. Nollner Morrissett has kept bas ketball practice organized. She, herself, shoots a smooth overhand shot away from the basketball. Nollner’s assistant, Carolyn Mc Cloud, is an agile guard and has helped keep everyone actively participating every afternoon. Not wanting to predict any de finite outcome, I can say that I think the sophomore-junior game will be exciting and tense. After the initial address, given by Dean of Women, Univer sity of Georgia, Mrs. Edith Stall ings, the duties of the various dis cussion groups and their leaders an‘d recorders were explained. The question of why these discussions were valid was given to the group, and Martha, already embarrassed by her late arrival, was the first one addressed for an answer. A mixer party followed the open ing gathering. Held at the Georgia Center, the party gave the girls a chance to relax and discover mutual friends. The first meeting of the confer ence began Saturday morning after our delegates registered. Held in the conference room, the gathering featured a talk by Dr. Jean A. Smith on “The Place of W. R. However, Martha and Margaret met and talked to Mrs. Mary Ella Soule, Head of the Department of Women’s Phy sical Education at the University of Georgia. Finding that Dr. Smith was taking the same plane from Atlanta as our delegates, Mrs. Soule offered to have the girls eat breakfast with her and Dr. Smitf in order that they might ride to gether to Atlanta. Once in bed, however, Martha and Margaret did not wake up in time to catch their ride (the hotel clerk forgot to wake them).
