THE SALEMITE Friday, September 26, 1958 Fellowships, Scholarships Available For Graduates Seniors planning to do graduate study should take advantage of the scholarship opportunities available to them. The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation announces its 19.S8-59 program of 1,000 fellow- shii)s in the humanities and in the social and natural sciences, to en courage undergraduates now in their senior year to undertake graduate work in order to enter the college teaching profession. As a new feature, a limited number of graduate fellowships will also be reserved for superior students now in tlicir lliird year so that their future may be assured. Students who receive a Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship will be paid $1500 plus tuition and de nomination by a member of the faculty. A student may request any mem ber of the faculty to nominate him; or else a member of the faculty who is familiar with the student’s work and interest in col lege teaching may write a recom mendation directly to the regional chairman, who is Fredson Bowers, at 530 Cabell Hall, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia. The deadline for receiving nomi nations for the 1959 Fellowships is October 31, 19.58. Application blanks will be mailed directly to the student on receipt of a faculty -nomination. She will con clude her program with a group of English songs. Two of these compositions, “I Got Me Flowers” and “Love Bade Me Welcome”, are from Ralph Vaughn Williams’ “Mystical Songs” which Mrs. Jaco bowsky first performed Easter of 1958 with the choir of the Presby terian Church of Winston-Salem. Clemens Sandresky, Dean of the School of Music, will accompany Mrs. Jacobowsky. Although the building of sets at Agnes Scott was Miss Bat tle’s beginning in theater, she did not remain behind the scenes. Her acting ability was shown in “Twel fth Night”, “Antigone”, and “Would be a Gentleman”. In the latter Miss Battle participated in three aspects of drama; as technical supervisor, as assistant director, in addition to being a member of the cast. Miss Battle’s interest in drama began before college. She claims she has always been a “ham in theater she found a legitimate out let for this tendency. This in clination was apparent to students and faculty when she stood up twice during chapel while Dr. Gramley was introducing new mem bers of the faculty. After receiving her B. A. in Eng lish at Agnes Scott, Miss Battle studied for her M. A. at Univer sity of North Carolina. Miss Battle 'was heard (by the cast only) shouting in excellent sing-song Oriental style, “Eat at Ching’s Chinese Restaurant!” An interest in religious drama spurred Miss Battle to study at Union Theological Seminary in New York. While in New York she directed two morality plays by Charles Williams; “Grab and Grace” and “House by the Stable”. Two days before the opening night while rehearsing a fight scene, the learn the part in record time so that the play could begin on schedule. Miss Battle gives two reasons for choosing Salem; , the atmos phere is akin to that of Agnes Scott, and Salem provides the back ground for educational theater in a liberal arts school. The purpose of drama is not for entertainment alone, but to enhance and enliven education. Miss Battle feels that drama is an important asset to a well-rounded college curriculum. At the close of the interview Miss Battle asked that her age be given as 95.
