Round backs hunched beneath round umbrellas clustered by the lily pond—the only straight lines m view are those of the rain falling both on those going to and from breakfast and on Mr. Paines sophomore lit. class . . . These are two scenes which charmed Salemites. They are likely to add sparkle to the phrase: “Good luck next year,” which students will soon be extending to Miss June Gentry, dance instructor, and Mr. Stephen Paine, instructor in Eng lish. Miss Gentry will be teaching at Mary Washington Collefee in Fred ericksburg, Virginia next winter. The Woman’s division of the Uni- Office Will Handle Trunk Arrangements versity of Virginia, Mary Washing ton has an enrollment of about 1500 students. Miss Gentry is excited about the prospect of teaching only dance and of having classes on all levels. She is looking forward, too, to studying again; she hopes to find a teacher in Washington, D. C., which is only an hour’s drive from Fredericksburg. Happy with her experience here at Salem, she feels she was “lucky in getting good dancers, people who were interested,” and hopes “mo dern dance has gotten a good start at Salem.” Mr. Paine is going to Duke next fall to complete w'ork on his Ph. D. He came to Salem two years ago after three years at Duke, where he worked simutaneously on his Master’s degree and his Ph. D. He has completed all the requirements for his degree except the writing of his dissertation, which is on the American author Edward Eggles ton. Mr. Paine will be on leave of absence and says he plans to return o Salem unless “Yale decides they want someone in their graduate pro gram,” which, he added, “is rather unlikely.” Students wishing to ship trunks or boxes by express should make arrangements for pickup service through the Office of the Dean of Students. Contact either Bright or one of the office personnel, and men employed by the college w'ill pick up the items to be shipped. This new procedure will eliminate confusion caused when girls make separate arrangements. Do not call Mr. Yarborough or any of his staff except through the office.
