THE SALE MITE

Students Express Varied Reactions To FITS Program
(Ed. note: After the excitement of
fits Day "'a® over, the Salemlte
conducted a poll of students to find
out how the activities were received ;
by all classes. The comments fol
low, without names since the pur
pose is only to give a cross-section
of campus views.)
The Legislative Board met Tues
day, October 10, at 5:00 p.m. After
the meeting was opened, Judy Sum-
merell announced that the finance
board will meet Tuesday, October
17, at 6:45 p.m. in 104 Main Hall
to distribute money to the organi
zations. It is requested that all
treasurers of budget and non-bud
get organizations be present at this
meeting.
The remaining agenda of the
Legislative Board meeting con
sisted of a petition submitted 'to.
Legislative Board by the freshmen.
This petition was to change the
present rule on pages 68-69 in the
handbook concerning freshmen
overnights. It was r.equested that
a freshman be allowed six over
nights during the first semester,
only two of which >may be taken
in the first month.
The Legislative Board.passed this
petition, making several changes in
wording and preceding the . vote
with discussion. It was agreed that
research about other schools had
been made in drawing up this peti
tion and that since those issuing
the petition had not asked for
changes in class cuts, nothing was
seemingly unreasonable about the
request.
FITS Field Day, held on Thurs
day, October S, was won by the
seniors. Thursday afternoon the
seniors won the field events. After
Dr. Byers emceed the contests held
in the gym, Frances Bailey, gen
eral FITS chairman, conducted a
“Miss Salem” contest., Five male
faculty members were dressed and
made-up by ten misfits. Mr. Michie
was chosen “Miss Salem” by ap
plause of those present. Thursday
night, each class presented an ori
ginal skit and song. The seniors
and sophomores shared honors in
I the skit class; the seniors alone
I won the song contest. The award
for spirit was won by the freshmen.
Freshman
I enjoyed every minute of it. I
really got to know the sophomores.
This was good, but .two or three
acted ugly to me even after FITS
Day. I didn’t mind wearing my
beanie. I think this is a part^ of
Salem. It is something I’ll always
remember in connection with my
freshman year. Most of the sopho
mores W'ere understanding.
Sophomore
I don’t think we should be so
restricted as not to allow “dead
bug,” and scavanger hunts. The
sophomores lost a lot of spirit be
cause of this. Upperclassmen
• should keep their mouths shut
about FITS before freshmen get to
Salem or in the handbook groups.
This takes away the surprise and
fun. There should be more team'
sports on Field Day like softball,
something everyone can do, rather
than just those who signed up. We
need more spirit in certain classes
and competition in making noise
other than yelling and screaming.
Freshman
There are two things I would
like to change: (1) There should
be enough beanies to go around.
(2) A freshman should be told
when she is given a MISFIT of
fense.
Sophomore
FITS was well organized. How
ever, the lack of faculty partici
pation was evident. The good
sportsmanship of our emcee and
the Miss, Salem contestants cer
tainly showed up the nonpartici
pants.
Senior
The freshman spirit was good.
The relays would have been better
outside. I think the purpose of
bringing the classes together was
fulfilled. Each class did its part
toward providing a good climax and
great, excitement—a good way to
let off steam.
Freshman
It was GRPIAT! It was especi
ally good to get to know the sopho
mores. The class competition draws
every class closer together and
builds spirit. I loved the party
after the skits. It was really great!
I wouldn’t change one thing about
FITS except having.the relays on
the outside.
Senior
I think FITS helped pull the
classes together as a .unit better
this year than ever before. It is I
the first time every class really
participated.
Sophomore
Compared with the unity of the
junior and senior classes, it was
utterly disgraceful that some
sophomores remained in the dorm
Thursday afternoon and night.
Members of all four classes had
Friday tests. These sophomores
could have studied ahead. Many
of them were playing bridge. This
was inexcusa'ble.
Senior
Since the pnesent seniors started
FITS, it was appropriate that they
won.. I ’was disappointed in the
ratting. Making the freshmen
dress funny looked bad and showed
a tendancy toward going back to
ratting.
Freshman
FITS was fun! Wearing beanies
and name tags helped us distin
guish ourselves and get to know
the sophomores. We also need to
get to know the juniors and sen
iors. In spite of the age difference

Field Day was well organized, but
I would like to see it outside. The
party after the skits was a com
plete surprise to me, and I enjoyed
it. Also, the idea of group games
is much better than individual rat
ting.
Sophomore
FITS was successful. In spite of
certain bad sports in both classes,
I think a good attitude was dis
played by sophomores and fresh
men.
Juniors
All we have to say is on the
sign under the black, and white
wreath on the door' of South.
