Dr. Den ton came to Salem from the Uni versity of North Carolina where he earned his Masters and Ph.D de grees and taught in the social science department. He did his undergraduate work at Oklahoma State University. A native of Sulpher, Oklahoma, Dr. Denton has held such various positions as florist’s assistant, com bination bell hop-night clerk in a resort hotel, and a cowhand before beginning his formal studies. As a | pasttime, he enjoys tinkering with automobiles, having once been an auto mechanic. | A major portion of his time is devoted to his wife and small child ren, Mary' Leigh, three years old, and Alfred Davis, five months. He assists in the leadership training program of Centenary Methodist Church. The rest of his “spare” ' time is spent in background read ing and digging up new and stimu lating ideas to present to his stu dents, especially those in his ad vanced classes. His pet project is a research study on population migration, especially in the light of its relationship to education. He hopes to intensify his study after leaving Salem. While here. Dr. Denton partici pated in a study of the Gold Tri angle areas, including Winston- Dr. A. M. Denton Salem, High Point and Greensboro. The project, conducted by the In stitute for Research in Social Sciences, was primarily aimed at determining the potential for growth development, trends in com munity life, types of community leadership, and the relationship ex isting between community leaders. His summers are spent in working on various phases of the academics. Dr. Denton leaves Salem to take the filter cigarette with the unfiltered taste. You get a lot to like. He says that he hates to leave Salem, but he is making the move because it will give him more room to tackle research. He leaves behind a mem ory of his willing helpfulness, his pleasant manner, a ready grin, and a quiet sense of humor. Salem Col lege bids Dr. Denton a fond good bye and wishes him well in his new position. AP Poll Cont from Winchester, Va., National Re publican, State Democrat, Conser vative. Not sure about G. O. Airy, independent “in process of making up my mind”, rather liberal, favors programs as advocated by administration. NOTICES Judge Allen Gwyn of the Super ior Court will speak to Mr. Wendt’s criminology class May 21 at 9:25. Any interested students are invited to attend the discussion. Judge Gwyn is well-known in his field for his new approaches to the problem of criminal punishment and re-habilitation, according to Mr. Wendt. ♦ * * All students are cordially invited to attend the Dean’s Coffee on Reading Day in the Club Dining Room. Call downs cease Reading Day, but those given after this time will be recorded for next year’s records. Fer linghetti? the regular weekly snows sophomore year ? the brief passing of the Junior-Senior picnic? When the twist, compact cars, racoon col lars, hair tipping, loafers with no socks, culottes (with the resulting new rule from IRS), bouffant hair styles, pleated skirts, bulky-knit rather than cashmere sweaters, A- line and wrap-around skirts, WRA trophies all came in ? Will we ever forget Raoul Gondemar? freshman frolic ? sophomore slump ? junior jitters, and senior . . . sentimen tality ?
