Salemites Practice Teach In Town, County Schools WRA Announces Tournaments In Archery, Golf By Frances Holton Now is the time when every week morning the Salem campus is alive quite early with seniors who leave their familiar classrooms for a morning in the Winston- Salem and Forsyth County schools. These girls are engaged in a six hour “course” which the catalogue defines as Education 330, Teaching and Practicum. During the first half of the fall semester, education minors majoring in math, English, history, and socio logy are practice teaching as well as carrying a maximum of six se mester hours at Salem. Seniors majoring in the other departments will practice teach during the spring semester. While practice teaching, a Salem girl is participating in the entire program of the school with which she is connected. She attends faculty and PTA meetings, as well as many student extra-curricular functions. She is preparing herself for that not-too-far-off day when she will have a classroom of her own. Practice teaching at Salem is carried out in accordance with the standards of the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher .Education; practice teachers have frequent conferences and periodic classroom observation by the fac ulty of the education department. Each teacher is offered suggestions which will help her correct her weaknesses. The enthusiasm among the stu dent teachers on campus seems to be unanimous. All of them agree that it is a very rewarding ex perience; however, it is consuming quite a bit of their time—more time than many had anticipated. The main complaint is that it has been hard to be on one side of the desk for part of the day and on the other side for the remainder. The teacher-student role is confus ing when you must switch from one to the other so frequently. Several said they would prefer practice teaching under the block system where they would not be taking college courses at the same time they were teaching. PIEDMONT ENGRAVING CO. student teacher put it, “I could give more time to teaching and do a better job if I could concentrate on teaching for a half-semester and go to class myself the other half.” There is, of course, the humorous side of the experience for many. One girl is disappointed because, “I haven’t got an apple!”, and an other could not hold back her laughter when one of her geometry students titled his paper “Plane (Hard) Geometry.” Every day brings new experiences and a stu dent teacher must be prepared to meet a variety of situations. Practice teachers are getting a first-hand idea of the problems and pleasures of being an integral part of the American system of edu cation. They are looking forward to classrooms of their own. r The WRA announces that the K & W CAFETERIAS 3 Locations DoMmtown 422 Cherry St. Parkway Plaza Shopping Center Soon also at Thruway Shopping Center Open for your convenience 7 days a week Girls!
