The first half of the program was dedicated to the Italian songs as_ well as twelve compositions of Robert Schumann’s “Liederkeis” (‘^ong Cycle”) The second part of the recital included five of the “Kinder-Totelieder” (Songs on the Death of Children”) by Gustav Mahler, and four English songs by contemporary composer Jean Berger. tone to the icy weather condi Meat-eater Students Get Notice By Indulgent Refectory Maids Some of Salem's devoted music majors make the hall a lounge. Especially during the singing of the “Kinder-Toten- lieder,” compositions requiring subtle interpretation as well as pol ished vocal technique, was the audience apparent, Mrs. Jacobowsky has not only the warm, embracing voice, but also the expressive face and poise necessary for captivating her listeners. The maids can’t believe how fast we plow through a meal.. One maid was asked to get ice cream when it was only four minutes past six. Breakfast is the maids’ favorite meal with grouchy voices yelling for more coffee and sleepy-eyed faces waiting to decide what they want. Then there is big swtich from railroad hats and hogwashers to curlers and up-lifted spirits of a Saturday dinner. “Everything is funny for me,” or so it appeared when one of this maid’s cohorts was singing during the blessing. Sometimes the maids get so carried away, they run the carts into the doors. And the maids, in agreement with the table cloths, admit “some of the girls sure are messy!” Then there was that Monday when strange green and yellow beanies and black tails came walk ing into lunch. Someone yelled “air raid,” and half the dining room hit the floor. One maid was heading for a table to bring the food when the shouting began. Being her first experience with FITS, the poor maid fled to the kitchen. After all these experiences, the maids all agree that the freshmen are best! To be sure, we give the maids a hard time, but deep down inside they know we love their grits.
