Office Seekers Give Qualifications
may result in a variety of Assembly
programs which arouse student in
terest.
This year’s Assembly Committee
has done an excellent job in pro
viding the student body with in
teresting and varied programs. Al
though there have been less As
sembly programs, those provided
have had intellectual and entertain
ment value.
The recent reactions regarding an
Assembly program which was un
fortunately missed by a large num
ber of students suggests that stu
dents are usually unaware of the
qualifications and interests of a
speaker prior to his appearance in
Assembly. I feel that it would be
beneficial to supply a means of pub
licity by which students may obtain
more information about a speaker
before he arrives on campus.
Another duty of Vice-President
is that of editing the Handbook,
which requires organization and
knowledge of the material.
Having been nominated to serve
the student body in the capacity
of Vice-President, I feel that I am
sufficiently aware of student needs
and interests. Thank you for your
consideration.
Paige French
The office of Vice-President of
the Student Government involves
tremendous responsibilities. One
of the most important is serving as
Chairman of the Assembly Com
mittee. If elected, my aim would
be to promote improved Assemblies
and to provide entertaining and in
formative programs.
Another important duty of the
Vice-President is to serve as Chair
man of the Handbook Committee.
Having served on this committee
last year, I am aware of the impor
tance of an inclusive and up-to-date
Handbook.
The third duty of the Vice-Presi
dent is to assume the duties of the
President in her absence. She must
be capable of acting efficiently in
any situation and be willing to serve
upon short notice. With this in'
mind, I accept with honor the nomi
nation for the office of Vice-Presi
dent. If elected, I will strive to
fulfill the obligations of this office
to the best of my ability.
Sandra Holder
The office of Vice-President of
Student Government entails many
responsibilities. As a member of the
Assembly Committee, she must both
have knowledge of and ability to
relate the desires of the students in
connection with Assembly programs.
Each year, I have found the pro
grams increasingly more varied, in
formative, entertaining, and relevant
to our present and possible future
interests.
The Vice-President, as she rep
resents us in the eyes of campus
visitors, must be interested in
people, display the pride she has in
Salem, and be open to suggestions
for general impovement to be taken
to Legislative Board or the Assem
bly Committee. The editorship of
the Handbook is another of her
duties in which she must work with
Legislative Board members to
clearly define student regulations
and describe various student or
ganizations.
Having served on the Board since
last March as president of the
Junior Class, I have been aware of,
interested and involved in the
workings of it. It concerns me that
more people do not insist upon
more accurate representation on
Leg. Board. Only through individ
ual participation in Salem’s many
phases will Salem become a part
of you. She is deeply a part of me
and I hope that whether elected
Vice-President or not, T can en
courage more people to become
involved in Student Government,
Assembly program planning, ac
ademic, Salem and class affairs,
and more personal friendships.
Thank you.
Martha McMurdo
We are in a cultural center. Edu-
fation, industry, and progress sur
round us as student citizens of
Winston-Salem and North Carolina.
We can develop our awareness of
the local and national environment
by becoming more interested in the
possibilities for enlightenment here
on this campus. I am honored to
be nominated for Vice-President of
Student Government. I feel that
this office allows the officer to pre
sent a dependable guide for the stu
dent in the Handbook and enables
her as a student Chairman of the
Assembly-Lecture Series Committee
to bring outside influences and in
tellectual exposure to the students
through Assembly programs.
Assembly programs give me an
opportunity to relate to the world
of which I am a part now, and of
which I will become a more active
participant. The excellent programs
at Salem enable the student to be
come a good listener, to absorb and
reflect on matters discussed, and
serve to supplement the individual’s
education by treating subjects out
side of her chosen fields.
I would welcome the privilege and
responsibility of this office and of
working with the Assembly Com
mittee. In the capacity of Vice-
President, I would be anxious to
serve you as we all work to serve
our Student Government.
Louise Sherrill
Thank you for this honor. It is
hard to imagine popping up to say,
“Assembly is dismissed,” but more
than that, it is challenging to think
of the , responsibilities involved in
this office—serving on Legislative
Board and Executive Board, as stu
dent chairman on the Assembly
Committee, and as Handbook edi
tor. I would like to meet these
challenges with new ideas and stu
dent interests.
My experience on Legislative
Board has shown me how student
requests are processed and how the
student body works through Legis
lative Board with the faculty and
administration. As Chairman of
SSC, I realize the problems in
volved in getting action on out
dated ideas, in follow'ing through
on these problems, and in working
with the faculty for solutions.
Assemblies this year have been
good because of the work of the
Assembly Committee to obtain
varied, interesting programs. Stu
dents need more opportunities to
express opinions about Assemblies
—whether or not it should be re
quired, and suggestions for speak
ers and thought-provoking films.
The Vice-President’s functions
are often unseen by the students,
but they are a major part of campus
life, involving her in close contacts
with guest speakers and also in
work as a vehicle of student opin
ion in the make-up of Assembly
and lecture programs.
of the Vice-President is to be the
official hostess for our guest
speakers. By working hand-in-hand
with the Vice-President this year,
I have come to realize that her job
is' mucli more than presiding over
Assembly every Wednesday and
Friday. I am aware of her “behind
the scene” responsibilities and feel
that I am capable of carrying them
out. I believe that Assembly is an
important and essential part of
life at Salem. It exposes us to
contemporary issues and different
types of people. The Vice-President
should strive to see that the in
terests and ideas of the student
body are acknowledged in planning
programs. I would be honored to
serve Salem in this capacity and
appreciate your considering me for
the nomination.
TREASURER OF STUDENT
GOVERNMENT
Dianne Dailey
Thank you for considering me
for this office. Being Treasurer of
Student Government involves a lot
of responsibility and work because
money and records have to be kept
accurately. I am willing to accept
this responsibility and to serve
Salem as best I can. If elected I
would like to inform the students
more about their budget and the
ways it is being best put to use.
By serving as Sophomore Class
Vice-Presient I have had occasions
to learn about handling money and
how to plan the best way of using
it. In high school I served as treas
urer of various minor organizations.
If elected I will do everything I
can to serve Salem. Thank you for
nominating me.
Lynn Gayle
The primary aim of our Student
Government is to unify the Salem
student body and to make its
authority effective and acceptable
to all—students, faculty, and admin
istration. The Treasurer is a vital
part of this government organiza
tion. She and the other officers
need the support and participation
of each student in order to maintain
the past effectiveness of our gov
ernment.
Naturally, the Treasurer is re
sponsible for handling financial
matters. I am eager to devote my
time toward these duties. I would
also hope to foster more student
involvement in Salem’s government.
Thank you.
invested in me by nominating me
for Treasurer of Student Gov
ernment. A vote of confidence is
always complimentary but partic
ularly so when it comes from
among your friends and peers.
You must decide for yourself if
I am adapted to this office. In the
way of qualifications I have had
some experience with accounting
as treasurer of Gramley Dorm last
year. This also gave me an oppor
tunity to find out that I do enjoy
working in this way. Since I’m a
math major, it naturally follow's
that I enjoy working with figures.
Moreover, I have had considerable
experience with balancing my bank
account—not all totally successful.
Although I am perfectly willing
to accept the responsibility offered
me, it is you who must weigh all
the qualifications of all the girls
involved and make your choice
designating your vote of confidence
in her.
Mary Pickens
When Nancy Richardson pointed
to me and said, “You’re the one I’ve
been looking for,” I did not expect
her to be congratulating me on my
nomination for Treasurer of Stu
dent Government. Having overcome
the initial shock, I realize that I
truly have been honored by this
nomination, and I accept it with
appreciation.
At Salem the office of Treasurer
entails many jobs under the title
of one. As Business Manager of the
Archway, I have been exposed to
the duties of a treasurer. Conse
quently, I bring to the office this
acquired knowledge and experience
which I will use to the fullest if I
am elected. I feel Salem students
should know the how’s and why’s
of the spending of their money by
student organizations. As Treasurer
I will be obligated to keep the
students well-informed about the
use of the student budget. As an
automatic member of the Executive
and Legislative Boards, I will try
to represent the student body as is
most beneficial for them. In any
duty required of the Treasurer I
will put forth my best efforts to
serve Student Government.

The office of Vice-President of
Student Government carries with it
a great deal of responsibility. As
Chief Marshal this year I have
worked very closely with the Vice-
President and have become well
aware of her responsibilities. By
serving on the Assembly Committee
I was able to see the planning and
organization which go into setting
up Assembly programs. By serving
with the Vice-President on Leg
islative Board I observed the process
and method involved in putting to
gether the Student Handbook.
Chief Marshal I have had
experience of being a “hostess”
Salem in welcoming visitors and
speakers. One of the main duties

I would like to thank everyone
who nominated me for Treasurer of
Student Government. This is a
great honor to be asked to be one
of the candidates, and I appreciate
the thoughts of those who felt I
could hold this office.
The office of Treasurer of Stu
dent Government is one which
carries with it a great deal of
responsibility. It is a job which may
not seem to be difficult, but the
management of the money for a
whole student body is a tremendous
job—one for which its holder should
seriously consider all sides This
job requires a lot of time and
thought to all the money which is
spent by the students during the
year.
Realizing the responsibilities and
time that this office demands, I
feel that I am capable of fulfilling
these duties to my best abilities. I
then feel confident in accepting
this nominaton.

The office of Treasurer of Stu
dent Government, as other major
o ces, stretches its commitment
ar beyond the boundaries of the
btudent Government room. In its
own right, the office of Treasurer
IS responsible to every student for
an accurate record of funds-the
necessity of such funds by every
budget organization on campus as
well as the expenditures of Student
Government itself.
Yet here, too, there is room for
greater possibilities. Evaluation of
tudent ideas and demands is as im
portant for Salem College as is Tn
ficer Student Government Trea
surer has such a responsibility to
every Salem student.

PRESIDENT OF IRS

Having served as a class repre
sentative to the IRS Councilor
one and one-half years, I feel that
I am well-acquainted with the f
tions of IRS and the methodsT
which these functions can b«st s
accomplished. I offer my
tion, my interest, and most of aii
my enthusiasm toward makin.g
an organization which will
serve you. Each of you represem!
Salem and as President of IRg ,
would like to represent you in tb
spirit which you have made so much
a part of Salem.
Because everyone at Salem is
member of IRS, student involve
ment m IRS projects is essential
for their success. I would like
committee of interested students to
work with the IRS committee for
continued improvement of these
social events.
IRS brings us many Salem tra
ditions such as the Birthday Dinner
and the Christmas Tree Lighting-
but just as important as Salem’s
traditions is Salem today. If elected
President of IRS, I would like to
re-evaluate IRS weekend, consider
ing the possibility of having the
concert and combo-party on one
well-planned day. I would also like
IRS to join with the May Day Com
mittee in sponsoring an outdoor
concert or combo party for May
Day Weekend. With IRS’s in
creased budget, I would try to use
that money allotted to IRS to your
best advantage in planning social
events you will enjoy.
Martha McMurdo
IRS—I Represent Salem in com
munity sharing. I fee! that IRS
works quietly to instigate and
maintain the little courtesies that
make our campus life special and
enjoyable. The rules established for
IRS are a natural outgrowth of our
concern for and consideration of
Salem’s students and campus. This
organization takes time for birth
days and Christmas in special and
traditional ways. I would look for
ward to working within t his
organization to provide entertain
ment for the Christmas Dance and
IRS weekend. I sincerely appre
ciate the interest of those who
nominated me for this office.
Martha Rasberry
IRS plays a significant part in
the life of Salem College and it
has been my opportunity to share
in all its activities for the past
year. As treasurer of this organiza
tion I have become aware of the
expenses involved in its yearly
operation and the many projects
that IRS sponsors. In the coming
year there is a possibility of an
increased budget for IRS in which
better entertainment for the Christ
mas Dance. Wake Forest mixer,
and IRS Weekend will be possible.
I am sincerely interested in seeing
that these social functions are im
proved and that we maintain the
projects that we have now.
My nomination for this office of
President is greatly appreciated.
There are so many opportunities
open for new projects through IRS,
and I hope that I will be able to help
initiate them in this coming year-
Thank you for the opportunity for
running for this office.
