According to Dr. James Edwards, head of the biology department, “Without modern, well-equipped laboratories, an experimental under standing of life’s processes is not easily within reach.” Majors and minors in biology, as well as those who have elected to take the courses, are learning manipulation of the new apparatus and experimental interpretation of the resulting data. Purchase of the equipment was possible through the gratuitous provision of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. Addi tions include the following: 1. a high speed and refrigerated centrifuge for the study of bacteria, viruses, and subcel- lular components (The class in embryology has used this cen trifuge for density gradient experiments with sea urchin eggs.) 2. a beta counter, known as a scintillation detector for highly accurate measurements of low level gamma emitting sub stances. 3. spectrophotometers for obtain ing cellular and molecular data (Marsha Dietz reports that the spectrophotometer was used in bacterial studies in genetics to measure the optical density by measuring the amount of iigl transmitted through the bacti rial culture. The students tal ulated data in the form o growth curves.) 4. a Warburg apparatus for meas urement of respiration rates photosynthetic rates, and let mentation. 5. a microtome cryostat for set- tioning frozen tissue (Ti piece of equipment eliminate 12-15 hours in the tedious pro cess of making slides of tissot Freezing the tissue eliminate the necessity of carrying il through the alcohol series a«l of embedding it in paraffin foi slicing. The tissue is mertlf frozen, sectioned and mounid on the slide.) 6. a sterilizer or autoclave foi sterilizing various equipmeal (The autoclave uses pressw and steam for the sterilizatioi the pressure allowing the tcnij- erature to reach about i degrees C.) 7. an analytical balance 8. marine aquaria 9. microscope for light, phase, aoi fluorescence microscopy. The new equipment has alreaJt aided students in the understand ing and the learning of vast a- mounts of biological knowledge. ANNOUNCEMENT Miss Jess Byrd, Acting Director of Alumnae Affairs, will have a party for student assistants at her apartment, Tuesday, May 20.
