Page Six THE SALEMITE Friday, February 27 Candidates Set Forth Their Platform the country. 1 began one of my own last summer. I have studied art appreciation for six years. At home, I am surrounded by fifteen hundred records ranging from Bee thoven to five versions of “Hair.” My sister’s involvement in ballet and music has given me a great deal of interest in these areas. I am interested in every type of liter ature, from Plato to “Avant-Garde.” As Chairman I will work hard to provide us all with a new experi ence. Mary Howard Ragland Dear Salemites, Establishing and expressing as pirations for the April Arts Com mittee is a difficult job because the Committee is new to Salem this year. We have not as yet seen the results of the Committee’s work; therefore it is hard to know at this point where it would be best to cut or add. However, because I be lieve the purpose of the Committee, which is to present a week in the spring that is devoted to the arts, is uniciue and fascinating, I would, if elected chairman, closely observe the performances and exhibits made available this year. For the follow ing year, I would try to do all that I could to guide and help the Com mittee to eliminate or replace what ever shortcomings there might be, and to expand to their fullest ex tent the best events. Sincerely, Mary Howard Ragland Marily Saacke April Arts is a new dimension here at Salem this year and I think a lot can be done with it. But in order for it to be a success, it is necessary to elect someone with a lot of spirit, enthusiasm and crea tive ideas. Most important, the person must be really willing to work. 1 feel I am qualified for this office as I’ve had much experience in this area. I was co-chairman of Founder’s Day and did much work on this year’s Christmas Banquet, including being chairman of the Faculty Children’s Party. April Arts is a chance for new expression in music, art, activity, and thought. It is an opportunity to bring outside talent to the Salem campus as well as emphasizing the talent hidden here. I hope you’ll give me the opportunity to make April Arts what you want it to be. PRESIDENT OF PIERRETTES Mary Davis I cannot enumerate my capabili ties or past experiences in two hundred words, so I will move on to my plans for the Pierrette Players. (Paul Newman has already been contacted for the first semes ter production of Hair. Promises! Promises!) I do hope to involve the student body in the activities of the Pierrette Players. The pro ductions need to become more rele vant to the student community. My platform is quality first. Carol Hewitt a freshman the first upperclassmen that 1 really got to know and ad mire were members of the Pierrette Council. Through those girls I be came involved in Pierrettes and since then have found this involve ment a very rewarding part of my life at Salem. My qualifications are these: I have been active in Pierrettes since the fall of my freshman year; I am a member of the dramatics honor society and am now serving on the Pierrettes’ Council; I am minoring in drama. I regard the theatre as one of the most important media of our cul ture—both as a source of pleasure and as a critical statement; it is in this spotlight that I want the Pierrette Players to serve Salem community in which we and live. the would like to try to put more emp hasis on meeting the upperclassmen during FITS Week. FITS should be a week of preparing them for the fun of Founder’s Day, being certain that they are really feeling a part of the “great Salem com munity.” My experience in high school would help me to carry out the job as FITS Chairman since I worked in many extra-curricular activities that called for me to organize and to create. Also, I would be willing to be come the friend of the Class of 1974. This is an important part in this job. For some freshmen it will be important to know that one per son is truly concerned with their class and concerned about them in dividually. Holly Materne the the Carrie Hughes Cathy Gazes Qualifications: member of the cast for the last three productions; Pierrot Award 1969; chairman of props last production Platform; enthusiasm Goals: greater opportunity, parti cipation, and experience for stu dents Dail Mahood Student interest and activity in Pierrettes is good, but it should be better. Effort should be directed toward producing more plays to in volve more students. In addition to their usual productions, the Pier rettes could perform a one-act play at local elementary schools and children’s wards of hospitals. Such activity would be excellent publicity and would allow Pierrettes to ex press themselves in a different dra matic form, children’s theater. Effort could be directed toward establishing intercollegiate activity, such as drama clinics, with nearby colleges. From this the student would receive constructive and diverse criticism of his performance. Each school would also benefit through discussions of technical problems of costuming, lighting, etc. Dramatics has always been my primary extra-curricular activity. In high school I was President of Jun ior Dramatics and Vice-President of the National Thespian Society. I received the Best Thespian Award for my performance in the senior play. At Salem I have served on the Pierrette Council for two years: Wardrobe Mistress last year and . Secretary and Stage Manager this year. I am a member of Alpha Psi Omega and a Hall President. I be lieve my past experience with dra matics, acting and "leadership, qualify me for President of Pier rettes. Having accepted this nomination for FITS Chairman, I have also had to accept the responsibilities that this office demands. Salem is growing academically and culturally each year with the introduction of new freshmen on its campus. Be cause of this, one of the goals of the FITS program is that every in coming freshman becomes a work ing part of the student body and its activities. If this is accomp lished Salem, as a whole, can take a stand in maintaining and improv ing the standards of this college. As a student at Ashley Hall in Charleston, South Carolina, I had the opportunity of taking part and holding various offices in clubs and other extra-curricular activities on and off campus. Of the offices I held, being President of the Cur rent Affairs Club was the most beneficial. The knowledge I gained of different types of people and of the world I live in helped me in my work in the Dramatic Club, Cerberus staff (literary magazine). Glee Club, French Club, and Latin Club. FITS Chairman has an im portant job to do! I sincerely be lieve that all five freshmen running for this office have the qualifica tions necessary to carry out the FITS program successfully. Since only one of us can hold this posi tion, the decision is yours—it is up to the new FITS Chairman to see that the statement: I am extremely interested in office of FITS Chairman for coming year, because I feel that the Freshman Introduction To Salem would be incomplete without some type of student indoctrination. FITS is very important part of a fresh man’s introduction to our college, because it enables her to meet not only the upperclassmen, but also other members of her own class. It is my desire, as FITS Chairman, for the end result of the FITS week and the Founders’ Day pro gram to be a strong unity and close ness among all Salem College stu dents. I believe that I am properly qualified for this office because at St. Catherine’s I was President of the St. Catherine’s League, an or ganization uniting students of all ages toward the goals of friendship, service, and spirit. Also this past fall I was in charge of our class’s participation in the athletic com petition of Founders’ Day and am therefore acquainted with some of the responsibilities involved in or ganizing the Founders’ Day pro gram. have any new ideas for the present, but I am the contrasting opinions FITS. I feel sure that we, as the upcoming sophomore class, will make FITS a meaningful experience for the freshmen, but the whole success depends upon a strong student involvement in FITS and Founders’ Day. I don’t FITS at aware of regarding Mary Murrill “The joy of comradeship is here. Thy spirit makes us one.” from our Alma Mater is fulfilled. Susan Gravely If FITS CHAIRMAN Leone Castles m Every Salemite is a Pierrette, and I want her to feel proud of this and to be able to look up to the leadership that the Pierrette Players provide. When Tcame to Salem as My nomination for FITS Chair man makes me characterize this of fice as having the chairman be someone who will act as a leader and a friend to the Class of 1974 as well as to organize and to pre sent a fun and a useful week of Freshman Introduction To Salem. I I am elected as FITS Chair man for next fall, I would like to make it as meaningful and fun for each freshman as it was for me. Being a bit homesick and insecure during my first days at Salem, I found that FITS brought out the real feeling of closeness that I now have with many upperclassmen as well as my own classmates. Working with my classmates dur ing Founders Day and representing them as President of the Freshman Class, I realize the importance of organization and unified participa tion for FITS to be successful. I would love to be able to take this job as a challenge and thus work to make each sophomore feel in volved in making FITS a fun and exciting time for the new freshmen. I came to Salem with hopes of becoming totally involved in the school’s activities and functions. The freshmen have made the be ginning of these hopes a reality— first, by electing me chairman of Founder’s Day and second, by elect ing me vice-president of the class. I can only hope that I have fulfilled their expectations of the leadership and organization qualities sought in me. As chairman of Founder’s Day, I worked very closely with Becky Lucas, the present FITS Chairman, and learned the many responsibili ties which her office holds in pre paring for Founder’s Day, as well as FITS. As vice-president of the class, I have served on Judicial Board and have taken a strong in terest in the workings of Legisla tive Board. Although my duties as vice-president do not include serv ing as a Legislative Board repre sentative, I hoped that my delving into its workings would give me a balanced and overall understanding of the school’s government and how it is managed. As Founder’s Day Chairman and vice-president, I have attempted to serve as a communica tion link between the freshmen and upperclassmen, and if elected to the office of FITS Chairman, I desire to work to understand the general opinions of all classes on the seve rity or laxness of FITS regulations from year to year to obtain a happy medium which generally agrees with the overall attitude of the student body. I realize the many differing opinions concerning this, and if elected, will stand open to any sug gestions pertaining to FITS or to the planning of Founder’s Day. Unification of the school as a whole IS very important to me, and even if elected, I could only succeed in my office through your suggestions and support. Thank you! CHAIRMAN OF SSC Rita Johnson Although I have had no e., ence m connection with the Si Service Council, I ^ii, students of Salem as well as I sibly can if I am elected chain I think the Student Service Co IS a worthy organization that ders many valuable services which many students are not aw If I am elected chairman, I ;y( try to see that the Council these services, consideration. exp Thank you for j Susan Lundeen First of all, let me take this portunity to thank the entire dent body and nominating conm tee for this nomination to run Chairman of the Student Sen Council. It is a big honr and me; more t me than I can ever expri According to the Student Hai book, the most important role SSC is that it be a communicat link between Salem students a the Administration and faculty, well as other colleges and the lo community. The SSC IS also responsible 1 the Book Exchange, Unicef Fui Help Fund, Student Governmi Information File, and the Voluntf Bureau. These jobs require a gr( deal of time. I enjoy this type extra-curricular activity; and thei fore, I am willing to devote all t time needed to fulfill the responi bilities of Chairman of the Stude Service Council. As chairman Salem’s 1969 Christmas Banquet, became acquainted with many the problems and areas of leade ship here. Throughout high schoi I held various other offices \vhi( (along with the experience tl Christmas Banquet has given me I feel, have prepared me for a j( such as this. Sandy McGlinn I feel that the main purpose ( the Student Service Council is I provide special services for tli benefit of every student at Salen As Chairman of this Council, would try to increase communica tion between Salem and other » stitutions. This would enable Saler to have a better knowledge of ho' to solve some of its problems ai» how to bring about significant am valuable changes. It might be use ful to provide more services in con junction with Wake Forest. ' Book Exchange could probably more profitable for all of us if c® in this manner. I must admit that I have had ® previous experience in an office o this kind. My only qualification that I promise to work hard,"'* persistence and responsibility! * that all of us at Salem may bene Ginger Neill I am honored to be nomina for the office of Chairman of dent Service Council, and I wan thank those who nominated la From my work on the Council th year, I understand the basic f' sponsibilities of the Council- lieve there are a lot of things Student Service Council can do to. woiifi^ contribute to Salem, and I like to see some new projects ried out. If elected, I would eW Board, a": SSC; working on Legislative I would do my best to keep an efficient council. 7) (Continued on p»8*
