Page Four THE SALEMITE Friday, April 24, I97Q Beyond The Square Cambodia’s Request Puts Nixon In Ticklish Spot By Barbara Homey In the last few weeks Cambodia seems to have emerged as a new potential trouble spot in Southeast Asia. The recent coup ci'etat and setting up of a new government, which American of ficials at first thought might be beneficial to the U. S. cause, now seems incapable of winning the support of the Cambodian people and of stabilizing the domestic political situation. Then last week the Cambodian government requested military aid from the U. S. to help repulse North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops stationed along the Eastern border of Cambodia. This re quest has put Nixon in a very ticklish political dilemma. The Cam bodian army does not possess the amount of men or equipment to defeat the Vietnamese communists by itself, and Nixon knows this. He also knows, however, how much opposition there is in the U. S. to our becoming any more involved in Southeast Asia than we already are. U. S. military officials are declaring that we ought to support the Cambodian government, at least materially, if not with our presence; but most civil officials tend to disagree, stating that any wider involvement in Southeast Asia would greatly harm our chances of winning a diplomatic settlement there.
