otus Land Wakes Up . . . Organizers Carol Hewitt and Leslie Leinwand mobilized action on the Salem Campus, Wed- nesday, May 6. Students, faculty, and friends gathered all jay at the flagpole to discuss Cambodia, Kent state, and the World. They wrote letters to sfficials and listened to those who wished to jpeak. It was beautiful. Glory? My ears have heard the story of the coming of the war. There'll be killing in the villages where wrath and hate are stored. C., Friday, May 8, 1970 MARTHA'S MANIFESTO (See Pages 3 & 4) Number 3 Ecologists Have Big Plans For Weekends Salem’s Biology department is planning two weekend field trips tor May. The Ecology and Plant Taxonomy classes, accompanied by :heir professor, Frank Willingham, «11 take part in the trips. Today, May 8, the students leave 5alem for Pawley’s Island, S. C. vhere they will study mudflat and Jrackish water creek communities. Saturday the students will travel to Southport and ferry over to Bald- lead Island. Sunday will be spent studying other natural communities ind viewing the Brook Green Gar- lens. The next field trip scheduled in- dudes a stay at Rockbrook Camp to study mountain communities. The biology students will leave May 15 and go to Brevard to study the sommunities there and to visit Maidenhair Falls in the afternoon. Saturday will be spent at the Mt. P i s g a h National Forest, Devil’s Courthouse and John’s Rock Na tional Fish Hatchery where stu dents will view the processes that go on in a trout hatchery. Sunday, the students will study communities in Asheville, Cragg Gardens, and at Wiseman’s View. Ecology field trips have become somewhat of a tradition at Salem as they are scheduled each spring. This year the Plant Taxonomy class will accompany the Ecology class to collect plant specimens for a course requirement. Mr. Willingham explained that he believes the Ecology class will bene fit from the two different sites as his students will have a chance to view and study the many communi ties they have discussed in class while on their way to Pawley's Is land and Rockbrook. Ensemble Sings Today, Blends Work, Pleasure Have you ever wondered what the girls of the Choral Ensemble do when they go on tour? We at tract males ! In fact, when we went to Davidson last fall for a piano concert. They were so enchanted that they insisted on our making 3 return visit. Yes, the Davidson College Men’s |Glee Club will be on campus Fri- llay. May 8 for another enchanting [evening with the Salem Choral En- [semble. The two groups will per- [form both jointly and individually. It will be held in Hanes Auditorium at 5:00, rather than at night since there is a symphony concert being held that night. Donald Plott, director of the Davidson Male Chorus, will open the program, conducting the singers in three selections that were per formed by the two choirs at the Sacred Music Convocation held at Davidson College last fall. The final group of sacred and secular numbers will be conducted by Paul Peterson, director of the Salem singers. r No one is obligated to pay an admission fee, but donations, as usual, will be welcome.
