Dean
M. Hixson serves as
Honorary Member and Advisor to
the Order of the Scorpion. In As
sembly Wednesday, November 4,
Dean Hixson announced the names
of seven new members of the Order.
The new senior members are
Jane Dimmock from McLean, Va.,
Fran Hicks from Waynesville, Mary
Leight from Winston-Salem, and
Harriet Morrow from Washington.
Three juniors were chosen for mem
bership. They are Mary Davis from
Belmont, Susan Lundeen from At
lanta, Ga., and Marily Saacke from
New Canaan, Conn.
The Order of the .Scorpion has
been in existence for more than 30
years. Its sole purpose and ideal is
service to Salem with no thought
of personal glory for individual
members or for the Order itself.
Membership is restricted to juniors
and seniors, and the number does
not at any time exceed fourteen.
Membership does not require the
highest academic average or the
strongest record of leadership, but
it does place high obligation on
those upon whom the honor of
membership is bestowed.
The Scorpions have no planned
program; they may do nothing big;
they may devote their energies to
intangible, small, unrecognized
needs. They may also be the mov
ing force or the quiet influence be
hind some larger project. At all
times the Order of the Scorpion at
tempts to be alert and responsive in
some tangible way to such needs as
may be observed by its members
or referred to it by others.
The seven new Scorpions join five
past members: Chris Coile, Dianne
Dailey, Sara Engram, Rebecca Mc-
Connaughey, and Emily Wood.
