SALtMITE Monday, March 12, .19,3 Page 10 ^ I SGA Candidates Discuss Topical Issues at Salem Continued from p. 9 stricted. (4) President -- No, faculty- advisory board, yes. The Presi dent of a college’s job is not to be “Big Daddy” to all the stu dents. The SGA President’s ad visor is the Dean of Women; however the College President should be involved as much as time will allow. (5) Yes, this is a vital link. (6) Yes. (7) Yes, Salem’s honor system is valid. It is unique in that stu dents are trusted to handle the responsibilities of upholding such a system. (8) The honor system could be made more effective by im pressing upon the incoming freshmen the importance of the system, and by the upperclass men setting good examples. (9) I do not think they have been handled too lightly. One good thing about rule infractions is that they are not made public. (10) Yes - I think it is a good idea that all “clubs” at Salem are non-discriminatory and every student is a member. (11) No “ at least not for every meal. I like homecooked meals, not tablets from vending ma chines. Cafeteria style eating could work efficiently at Salem, though if students would not all come at the same time and have to stand in line for an hour, like we did on Feb. 12th. (12) Yes, post the times it will be open in a conspicuous place so more students would be en couraged to use it. (13) Work through the Inter club Council for communication. (14) Yes, with the exception of married day students. (15) Make things more open to students so that fewer rumors will be fostered. Treasurer of SGA Barbara Perry (1) No answer. cases which have come to my attention have been handled with common sense, a must for any subjective decision. (10) IRS has rightly tried to ad just the traditions of Salem to the general wishes of the stu dent body as a whole. It must remain an organization for all students, for without the sup port of the students it would be ineffective. (11) I feel other options are open to improve the refectory food and service. A more active student role in planning could provide realistic improvements in the menu. Allowing students scholarship hours for working for the refectory could add to the amount of financial aid avail able while letting Salem students improve the general service. (12) No answer. (13) The calendar has been ef fective in the past and reduced general clutter by repetitious no tices. Additional use of the news paper as a club column, etc. would also give students an es tablished place for finding out what clubs are doing. (14) Any club open to all mem bers of the student body that interests a significant number of students should be funded by the SGA dues, as without this financial support many clubs could not function. (15) The treasurers should let students know when and where their money is being spent in stead of giving them a meaning less figure. A concerted attempt to find out what charges the students would like to see in the campus would let the students being represented have a more active role in the monetary af fairs of the SGA. Enlisting the students’ opinions in SGA deci sion-making would also give the student body a more valid parti cipation in SGA affairs. Amy Robertson (2) The cost of adding a gyne cologist to the staff could not be fairly paid for by all students since that service would not ap ply to enough students. Family planning service should be more available to those students de siring the service by personally arranging for a local doctor to serve students through referral by Dr. Pennell. Transportation could be made available through the infirmary for all doctors’ appointments. (3) No answer. (4) Working with the adminis tration and the faculty-advisory board is obviously one of the ma jor roles of SGA president. (5) Yes. (6) The successful working of the faculty-advisory board is evi denced by the conscientious at tempts in obtaining all the stu dents’ feelings about issues not just the most vocal. They acted quickly and favorably concern ing the freshman overnight peti tion. (7) The honor system has been successful in giving students a flexible and common sense way of handling exams, rules, etc. (8) The rules protecting the honor system must place enough responsibility on the students so that it remains supported by honor and not spies or a myriad of trivial rules. (9) The fact that little is known about whether the infrac tions have been handled properly shows that they have at least been handled discretely. The See above, under Chairman of Interdorm. Katherine Franklin (1) Salem is a small girls’ school with high academic stan dards. The students are friendly and have close relationships both among themselves and with the adminsitration. The school is sur rounded by history and tradition and is somewhat conservative, but it is possible for students to make changes in a peaceful manner. (2) If family planning facili ties are available in Winston-Sa lem, 1 don’t hink it is necessary to have such facilities at Salem. (3) I think the call down sys tem is a good method for enforc ing the rules. A student can get more than one chance since she has to break minor rules several times before she is punished. (4) Yes. The SGA president should act as a spokesman for the student body in order to keep the President and the facul ty advisory board informed of student opinions and ideas. (5) Yes. I don’t think that changes should be made so ef fectively as they are now if stu dents had to work directly with the administration. (6) Yes. I think the faculty advisory board has been success ful in advising students over pe titions and in telling the stu dents the administration’s view points. (7) Salem’s honor system is valid only if the students believe in it and have a high respect for Salem’s reputation as an honor able school. I think most stu dents have that respect. (8) Our honor system could bC’ made more effective if a stu dent had the duty rather than the right to turn in a person who has broken the honor code. I think the system is effective as it stands now and I don’t think this change is necessary or desir able. I’m glad the student is given a choice whether to turn someone in or not. (9) I can’t answer this ques tion since I don’t know how rule infractions have been han dled. It’s not my business to know how a person has been punished for breaking a rule. (10) IRS can encourage or dis courage students to uphold Sa lem’s honor and traditions, but it is up to the students or the student body as a whole to de cide whether it will be done. IRS and other clubs should con tinue as organizations for all stu dents as long as each student pays those club fees. (11) Right now I am opposed to cafeteria food service since I would hate waiting in line for every meal and because I do not believe the refectory is equipped to handle cafeteria service. I also think that family style service makes Salem more like a home and less like an institution. I can’t make a definite opinion, though, until we have had our weekly trial cafeteria service. (12) The book exchange should be run more efficiently if it were open longer and if books that are no longer used were put away or sold on a shelf separated from the books in use. (13) I think clubs should keep each other informed in their pro grams and projects and perhaps work together in money-raising projects. (14) Yes, clubs cannot function without money, and the easiest way to raise the necessary mon ey is for each student to pay a small fraction of the total a- mount. Think of all the money raising projects we’d have on campus if each club had to raise its own money. (15) Since the treasurer serves in both legislative board and executive boards I could make any position more efficient by first knowing students’ opinions on various issues and then work ing to bring about the necessary changes. jor link in student faculty rela- take advantage of these services tions and I believe that in order Printed information should be for Salem College to operate - - - Secretary of SGA Sarah Tucker (1) Salem College is a four year liberal arts college for girls. It offers a girl the oppor tunity to learn in various aca demic fields, the opportunity to build life-long friendships, and also the opportunity to be come involved and to partici pate to whatever degree she would like. (2) I believe that family plan ning facilities should be made available for anyone who needs to use such services. However, I do not think it would be vital for Salem to have a family plan ning facility on campus. (3) I believe that the call-down system is needed, but I also be lieve that it is not fool-proof. Until a better system can be de vised, I think this one is best. (4) I believe the SGA presi dent should work very closely with the president and the facul ty advisory board. She is a successfully - this is a necessity. (5) Yes, I believe this board does contribute greatly to an improved relationship between the students and faculty. I think it is advantageous for the stu dents to have such a board to express their viewpoints, who in turn, can clearly express these views to the faculty. (6) Yes, I believe that our faculty advisory board does oper ate successfully. I think that both the faculty and the stu dents consider this board impor tant and useful in determining, solving and meeting the various needs of the college. (7) Yes, I believe the Honor System here at Salem is valid. Each individual is trusted by others and is expected at the same time to fulfill that trust. It is a 2-way system and needs the support of the students and faculty in order to fulfill its ex pectations and duties. (8) I believe that the honor system is only as effective as we, the students, who live under it are. Therefore, in order to in crease its effectiveness, we must look at ourselves. (9) I do not feel adequate to answer this question. The pen alties girls have received for vio lations have been made known only to those directly involved. Because of this I would have no basis for an answer. (10) I believe IRS does play an important role in upholding Sa lem honor and traditions. It’s purpose, as stated in the hand book, does formulate an impor tant part of life at Salem. I be lieve that clubs such as IRS should continue as an organiza tion for all students at Salem. (11) I, personally, wish that Sa lem would keep the present fam ily style service, and make some improvements in the ser vice. Not standing in line for meals and the warm atmosphere of family style meals are only a few of the advantages for main taining the present service. (12) I do believe that the book exchange could be run more efficiently. I believe a larger area is needed for the book ex change, longer hours for it to be open, and more organization planned in advance. (13) I believe clubs should work together as closely as possible to better communication here at Salem. By working closely to gether, I believe clubs can help each other while at the same time helping the Salem students and faculty. If communication improves, I believe participation also will. (14) I believe that this question depends on how these fees will be used and how much they are. (15) I would like to see the po sition of SGA secretary maintain and promote communication a- mong students, among students and faculty, and among students and the adminsitration. I would also like to support the other of ficers of SGA in any way possi ble. greeted to the family plan^i facilities already located in Win- ston-Salem. ma- Cindy Lovln (1) Salem is what you make it. Be excited and be involved, and you will love it. (2) I do not believe that full time family planning facilities are needed at Salem. Although family planning is an essential part of 20th century life, I feel that only a few students would (3) In a small college commu- nity such as Salem, it is neces- sary to have some discipline method for minor offenses and to remind students of their re- sponsibility to others. The call- down system is neither perfect nor completely effective, but it still seems to be the best system for our needs. (4) The SGA President is sup. posed to represent the student body’s opinions. She should work closely with the President and the faculty-advisory board and express to them the feelings of Salem students. (5) A faculty-advisory board is needed as a link between stu dents and adminsitration. Mem bers of the board should be re sponsive to the needs and de sires of students. (6) When used, the faculty- advisory board operates success fully. The board is not used of ten enough, because students do not realize or forget that it is our best source of communication with the administration. (7) I consider Salem’s honor system valid. I believe that the majority of students respect the honor code and adhere to it. (8) I think that our honor sys tem is effective as it now stands. (9) I know very little about rule infractions committed this year. Therefore, I do not feel that I am qualified to judge their handling. (10) 11^, and all clubs, share the responsibility of upholding Salem’s honor and traditions. I also believe that all students should be members of all these clubs. There is always a possih lity in a small college communi ty that the clubs will become too cliquish. By having the objectives of each club benefit the whole Salem student body, this possi bility is lessened. (11) The major complaints a- bout food service at Salem con cern the quality of food and hav ing to pay for meals you dont eat. I personally prefer family- style meals, but if cafeteria ser vice would provide solutions to these problems. I would be iJ favor of it. (12) I know very little about the way the book exchange is run. A more central locatiort, posted lists of resalable text books, and announced hours o might improve its operation, service. (13) All clubs should work to gether. With interclub cooperS' tion, many joint projects an programs could be sponsored, thus increasing the number o activities on campus. (14) As long as all students art members of the clubs, an long as the club projects are the benefit of the entire stride | body, club fees should e eluded in SGA fees. (15) As Chairman of April A j I would attempt to spare moments exciting an e five.
