at Halloween, door decoration
contests at Christmas, or lepre
chaun hunts on St. Patrick’s
Pay? The year would end with
April Arts Week filled with
songs, games, and exhibits of the
things you have made.
Mary Lou Cunningham
(1) A small liberal arts school
for women where each is treated
as an individual.
(2) If there are enough girls
on campus who feel a need for
such a facility then we need one
in order that they don’t have to
go out in search of such facilities.
(3) I feel this system has lost
any significance as a reprimand
for student, but unless some
other method is inserted it must
continued.
(4) Yes, there should be a
close relationship between these
three units at Salem to create
a unified community.
(5) Yes, there needs to be a
mediator between the two
groups to help reach successful
agreements.
(6) Yes, the board seems to
be working to create an amiable
relationship between the stu
dents and administration and
bring about compromise.
(7) Yes, most definitely. With
an honor code such as Salem’s
a sense of personal pride as well
as a comfortable atmoshpere for
living and academics is created.
(8) I feel it is effective as it
is not set up.
(9) From my own knowledge
of the handling of these infrac
tions each person has been
treated fairly, neither too harsh
ly nor too lightly.
(10) IRS has the responsibility
to uphold Salem honor since its
name is “I Represent Salem.” I
feel like there should be some
organization on campus to work
in the interest of all students
here at Salem.
(11) 1 would like to see cafe
teria food service tried for one
meal a day and the others family
style. If eventually the cafeteria
style proved more successful
then a total switch could take
place.
(12) Yes, by providing text
books at lower prices and having
them available all year instead
of at the beginning of each se
mester.
(13) I would like to see more
clubs working together on vari
ous projects. Also, clubs could
setup a system of reporting what
they each do each week in
meetings.
04) Yes, each club’s allotment
is small and should be paid for
by the students since we are all
included in each club.
(15) To make my position more
efficient I would want to make
sure 1 accurately reported the re-
■ ports of each meeting.
Salem’s honor system
Questions:
(1) If you were asked to des
cribe Salem to an outsider, what
would you tell her?
(2) Are you in favor of or op-
iwsed to family planning facili
ties on campus?
(3) How do you feel about the
call-down system?
I (4) Should the SGA president
work closely with the President
®d the faculty-advisory board?
p) Should the students have a
acuity advisory board as a link
between students and administra
tion?
(b) Does our faculty-advisory
uard operate successfully at
present?
(7) Is
valid?
(8) How could our honor sy
stem be made more (if neces
sary) effective?
(9) Do you think rule infrac
tions this year have been handled
too harshly or too lightly in
general?
(10) Does IRS have an impor
tant role in upholding Salem
honor and traditions? And
should IRS continue as an organ
ization for all students?
(11) Do you think Salem should
switch to cafeteria food ser
vice ... explain your reason.
(12) Do you think the book ex
change could be run more ef
ficiently? If so, how?
(13) To what extent do you
think clubs should work together
for '’ommunication?
(14) Do you think club fees
should be included in SGA fees?
(15) How can you make your
position (if elected) more effic-
ent?
Secretary of Interdorm
Marilyn Turner
(1) It is very good academical
ly, one has no trouble in keeping
busy, and the girls are all quite
nice. There is a larger variety of
girls here than I had expected.
(2) I am in favor of it.
(3) I don’t feel that it is as ef
fective as it should be.
(4) Yes, because she represents
the student body when appealing
to them.
(5) Yes, in matters concerning
regulations in dormitory and so
cial life. I don’t feel that they
are necessary to act upon Honor
Council matters though.
(6) As far as I can tell - yes.
They seem quite willing and ea
ger to consider and discuss any
student cause.
(7) Yes, I believe it is valid.
It has proven to be valid in the
past and I have heard no com
plaints against it recently.
(8) I think that it is quite ef
fective now because the rules
are flexible enough to adjust to
the situation. More rules would
create more loop holes.
(9) In general - too lightly.
The same people keep getting
call down for the same things.
(10) I think that IRS is very
important for maintaining a so
cial unity at Salem. Academics
is not all in education. Clubs
give you a better opportunity
to become educated about peo
ple.
(11) No. This is one tradition
about Salem which I love. I
think it’s important to relax at
mealtimes and just be able to
talk. Cafeteria style is too
rushed.
(12) Yes, if it opened before
or at the same time as the book
store. Then you could sell and
buy used books before you
bought new ones.
(13) They should work together
in scheduling events, meetings,
and possibly planning joint pro
jects.
(14) Yes, otherwise they would
get less money and people would
be less likely to attend a variety
of club meetings.
(15) Since I have been a mem
ber of- the Honor Council, I feel
that I have a general knowledge
of how to handle infractions of
regulations to the best interest
of all parties involved. I feel
that I have the background and
the interest to fulfill the office
and do it well.
Wendy Wyckoff
(1) Salem is a small girls’
school which is fairly liberal for
a private college.
(2) I think that girls who need
these services should be advised
as to where to go to get them.
I do not think Salem needs a
family planning center for the
college alone.
(3) The present system is ef
fective. However, I don’t think
that call downs are taken seri
ously. Perhaps fewer call downs
should constitute a greater penal
ty-
(4) Yes, because this makes
for good faculty-student relation
ships. Also, the students and
faculty should be informed of
each others’ views.
(5) Definitely because stu
dents can inform the advisory
board members of their feelings,
and they can communicate these
feelings to the Board of Tmstees.
(6) No. The members do not
attend Leg. Board meetings and
are therefore not completely a-
ware of what is going on.
(7) I think that most students
respect the Honor System. The
only problem is that most are
hesitant to report infractions.
(8) It could not be made more
effective unless the individual
students upheld it better them
selves. The effectiveness depends
on the students.
(9) I think they have been
handled fairly.
(10) Yes, IRS does play an im
portant part in Salem’s campus
life. IRS and the other clubs
are needed to offer activities to
the students. They should be
open to all students who are in
terested.
(11) No, because cafeteria style
would take away much of the
atmosphere and tradition of the
meals.
(12) Yes, by having a larger
place for the books to be set up
instead of being in boxes.
(13) I think the clubs work to
gether efficiently through Inter
club Council.
(14) No. I think IRS should be
included, but the other clubs
should raise their own money.
(15) Make the students more
aware of the procedures and
policies of Interdorm Council.
Beth LaFitte
(1) Salem is a girls liberal arts
college. The smaller student bo
dy enhances the college because
the student-faculty relationship
is better and the students have a
sort of closeness. I don’t think
you could find a better school
of this type or one with better
rules. The honor system is based
on each individual, not the
group.
(2) I’m in favor of family plan
ning facilities. If a girl is married
or not she needs to be informed.
There’s no better time than now
and no better place.
(3) Some aspects of the call-
down system are effective,
whereas others are ridiculous.
Like all systems, though, there
must be some beginning if there
is going to be an organization.
(4) Yes, I think the SGA presi
dent should work with the Pres,
and faculty-advisory board.
(5) I think this would be very
effective as a means of commu
nication. Really, the students
need to be heard and this is one
possible avenue.
(6) I don’t believe the faculty-
advisory board informs the stu
dents of what’s being done,
therefore, 1 don’t know if its
effective!
(7) I feel the honor system is
only as valid as each student
makes it. That’s what it’s sup
pose to be anyway.
(8) If the system becomes
more effective, it only depends
on the honor of each individual.
(9) No answer.
(10) IRS upholds Salem honor
and tradition as much as any
club on campus.
(11) At the present I don’t
think the refectory is designed
for such service. If we were to
have a cafeteria food service I
think the time should be ex
tended and there should be a
wider variety of food. My main
critism is that so many times
with buffets by the time the
first few people are finished all
the food has run out and the
maids are cleaning up! The ones
at the end are left “starved!”
(12) Yes, if the exchange
would make public the times
it’s open, etc.
(13) To the extent necessary to
carry out a project and do it
well!
(14) Yes, each club needs to
have an idea of its budget at the
beginning of the year. Also it’s
one less thing for the students
to have to worry about paying.
(15) All I can say, is I’ll do the
best of my ability!!
Debbie Knight
(1) I feel I would tell some
one that Salem is a family of
friends. The college offers friend
ship and also an opportunity to
grow independently. It’s a great
place to live.
(2) If the majority of girls feel
that these services are needed
then I would definitely be in
favor of them. I feel that the
students should decide and not
any one individual.
(3) I am generally in favor of
the call-down system. It provides
a good means for disciplinary ac
tion.
(4) I definitely feel that the
SGA president should work
closely with the President and
the faculty-advisory board. This
is one of the main links the stu
dents have to the administration
and I feel we should take advan
tage of this.
(5) Yes. 1 feel the faculty ad
visory board can be an excellent
link for the students. In my ex
perience they have always tried
to be fair and have listened to
the students and our opinions.
(6) I feel that it has been sat
isfactory in its operation. They
seem to be quite fair and quite
attentive to our opinions.
(7) I think that the Honor
System is as valid as the Salem
students make it. We should all
be quite aware of its code and ac
cording to*our own integrity fol
low it as best we can.
(8) i feel that most people are
aware of the integrity one must
have to follow the honor code. It
is the student’s responsibility,
therefore, to make it effective.
(9) Not having served on Hon
or Council or Interdorm I do
not know if rule infractions
have been handled too harshly
or too lightly.
(10) I feel that if IRS stands
for I Represent Salem it should
uphold Salem Honor and tradi
tion. I feel that if students de
sire to belong to IRS then they
should.
(11) I feel that for lunch it
could be more effective than
the family style dinner because
of the variety of schedules of
classes. However, for dinner I’m
Page 11
in favor of family style meal and
Sunday lunch.
(12) I haven’t had sufficient
contact with the book exchange
to make a sound judgement and
evaluation.
(13) I feel that they should
definitely correlate their activi
ties. If they could plan their
activities around each other then
I feel it would be a better system
of communication.
(14) I feel that the clubs need
our money to be able to run ef
ficiently. After all we all take
advantage of their activities and
entertainments.
(15) As "Secretary of Interdorm
I would keep an open mind in
judging the cases brought before
Interdorm.
Secretary of Honor Council
Paula Jeffords
(1) Salem is a four year liberal
arts college where young women
may come to work for an edu
cation in an atmosphere of com
munity, friendship, trust, and
concern. It is an opportunity
for anyone who wants it to be
come involved and to grow.
(2) Family planning facilities
should be readily available to
anyone in need of this facility.
If the need is here at Salem we
should have it.
(3) Some form of call-down
system is needed. Perhaps a bet
ter system could be one of the
projects of next year’s SGA.
(4) Definitely yes. She relays
the opinions of the student bo
dy, and the President and facul
ty-advisory board need to be
very aware of what Salem stu
dents are thinking and feeling.
(5) Definitely yes.
(6) Yes.
(7) Salem’s honor system is
valid. It places trust and respect
in teh individual and deals with
those who violate this trust.
(8) The effectiveness of the
honor system depends entirely
upon the cooperation and in
volvement of the students and
faculty.
(9) The treatment of rule in
fractions is a matter considered
solely by the student and honor
council. I know that each mem
ber of honor council does her
best to treat each ease.
(10) IRS does play an impor
tant role in upholding Salem
honor and traditions. Because
each member of the student
body is affected by her policies,
IRS should continue as an or
ganization for all students.
(11) I think that Salem should
work for the most effective food
service whether it be cafeteria
or family style. Every aspect of
this proposal should be explored
and presented before making a
decision.
(12) We definitely could use a
larger space for the book ex
change. Some more of the out-
of-dafe books could be put to
better use than storage and long
er hours would be helpful to
most students.
(13) Clubs should work togeth
er for communication to the
extent that all are working for
the benefit of the students. 1
don’t think there should be any
limit to cooperation if the best
interest of the students is the
constant consideration.
(14) Club fees should be in
cluded in SGA fees so that they
may all work effectively.
(15) The Secretary of Honor
Council should do her best to
serve the council members with
