To be perfectly honest until recently I did not know’ In order to find out what really happened to a petition I had to ask someone associated with the whole process. As was out to Question: (7) Should our present petition system be main tained as the student's main instrument for evaluating and presenting to the administration student opinions? pointed me, in the event that there was any disagreement be tween the recommendation of FAB and the college president any group has the right to ask for a hearing before the board of Trustees. The delay of action factor is th, ^ the student body is left ignora.it of actio.is taken, More publicauon of action ta ken by legislative board, FAB, the college president, and trus tees could rectify the situation. (7&8)Perhaps it is too idealistic to expect a student to turn in either herself or a fellow stu dent, and to be responsible for her actions without some type of reinforcement. As it stands now our honor system seems to be ineffectual in bringing a- bout desired results due to the fact that the general student body has no conception of ac tions taken by Honor Council. Our system could be more effec tive if individual infringements of the honor system and action taken were enumerated and publicized with no personal ref erences mentioned. Students would then realize the possible consequences of their actions (or the consequences of their pos sible actions) as related to them selves and the general student body. (9) A major weakness in handling infractions involves the student who does not take it upon herself to confront a viola tor. (10) The only traditions that IRS seems to uphold are those of remaining unseated before meals and IRS weekends. Christ mas Tree Lighting is actually the most important tradition for which IRS is responsible. )RS is a vital organization, but its importance lies not in honor and traditions but in providing social activities with a community spirit in mind. Giving a call down for violating set social standards (such as “walking across the grass, wearing scarves over curl ers, or misbehaving in assem bly”) does not bestow honor upon Salem because the cal down system is virtually ineffec tive. (11) I am in favor of the fam ily style; however, student an refectory staff relationships could be greatly improved (12) Does it run?
