Averell Pharr (1) Salem is a four year liberal arts college for women which has high academic standards, operates on an Honor System, and is situated in the heart of Old Salem. The elements of life at Salem are just far enough from perfect to provide interesting topics of discussion that often end in progressive action. (2) It is a little ridiculous to ignore the fact that there is a need for such facilities among Salem students, and, as long as there are needs, 1 see no reason to object to family planning fa cilities on campus. (3) It should be replaced by mere consideration for other stu dents just as soon as we are considerate of others. (4) I feel the SGA president should work closely with the college president and the faculty- advisory board in a trusting re lationship in which each knows what the other two are doing and can possibly offer different views in an effort to make the best decisions in view of faculty, students, and administration. (5) Yes, 1 think we need a body like this as a laison be tween the three groups. 1 think having a student maybe even to just sit on the board, and/or possibly a member of the Board of Trustees are two suggestions which should be considered. (6) If someone would define “successfully”, then 1 think we could get somewhere. Faculty Advisory Board seems to operate with our best interests in mind. They are open to our ideas, and representation is given to us through the two student appoin ted faculty members to the Board. The Faculty Advisory Board is not an inactive or un concerned group. (7&8) If the validity of Sa lem’s honor system is sincerely questioned by Salem students, then 1 think we are in trouble. There are many misconciptions about how the Honor Council works - understandably, since great pains have been taken to keep cases as quiet as possible in the offender’s best interests. Per haps we are too secretive about the handling of cases involving academic honor, and maybe more support could be given to the honor system if students were certain that offenders were penalized for their violations. 1 personally believe that the great majority of students sup port the honor ysstem, but also feel it could be made much stronger if students realized how important it is to exercise their privilege of reporting infractions of the honor code. In a system like this which is so necessarily based on trust, allowing others to break it without penalty is a frank denial of trust in it. The honor system can only be effec tive if those under it feel this is something vital to their life here and worth preserving, and then actively help it from being jeo pardized by encouraging others to either uphold it themselves or pay the consequences.
