Personally, I believe this would lessen Salem’s potential for a close community. (4) Whether the Student Center sells beer or not, is not going to in crease the number of students on campus on the weekends. Half the fun of drinking is going out, getting away to another atmoshpere, playing with different people. Keep in mind that you can take beer down there. Teh Student Center seems more suited for the new sandwich shop than for a tavern. (6) Necessary ~ I hope someone will want to know why. (6) He should be aware of student affairs but this is Dean John son’s job. (8) Limited. (11) Yes, on the whole, and I believe this is a special part of Salem. Averell Pharr (2) Some - I think we should even consider renewing some tradi tions which we have done away with at Salem - or start others. (3) I approve of this possibly for seniors only, but feel that with a school this small, it could hurt what Salem spirit exists. (4) Approve - but this isn’t the only thing that can be done. (5) I think overnight sign out is necessary in the case of real emer gency, but 1 don’t see that evening engagement signout is necessary ~ with the exception of SalH. (6) A college president should be directly involved in student af fairs of an academic nature, but I question his involvement in social affairs because this is so far removed from his knowledge of students. (7) Yes, but 1 think Trustees need more knowledge of students to enable them to enact on these petitions. (9) More and better communication. (10) Continued in approximately the same form. (11) Satisfactory - but what is so great about merely‘satisfactory’ student-faculty relations? Lynn Mappus (1) Student participation in the academic as well as in the social life is vital in producing a balanced community. Salem’s curriculum sUould not be restricted to the conventional courses but should in clude more courses catering to the student’s interest (for the non major history of ghosts, contemporary politics, journalism, the phy siological and psychological aspects of sex - team taught by science and psychology). (2) Those traditions which are becoming a wee bit stale and out dated or are not instilling a sense of community should be discon tinued. (j) Yes. But it is necessary to look at it from an economical stand point. Being financially stable necessitates filling dormitories; how ever, in the case of unusually large freshman classes or in the event that Salem decides to permanently increase her enrollment, a certain percentage of seniors and conceivably juniors should be permitted to live off campus. (4) Yes. This move would improve interstudent relationships as well as weekend social conditions. Visitation and accomodations for male guests would also be valuable in making the campus more bear able on weekends. (5) They are necessary in as far as locating people in emergency si tuations but should not be used for “snooping” purposes. (6) He should be involved to the extent that he is familiar with the character and ideas of the student body and its general feeling toward academic and social issues with the result that he can work fairly and trustingly with the SGA. He has the responsibility of being aware of student activities but should not be directly involved unless we are striving to foster the image of an invincible J. C. (7) Yes the petition system should be maintained, but its efficien cy in communicating student desires and feelings to the Trustees should be improved. (9) More communication through the media mentioned plus more student communication through student exchange of ideas via inter dorm discussion groups sponsoring various members of SGA, faculty and administration. (10) Altered. In its present form Founder’s Day leaves much to be desired. (11) Yes, if compared to relationships at other colleges. No, if we consider those on Salem campus. It seems that relationships have moved from a social extreme last year to an academic extreme this year. In order to reach a balanced situation, students and faculty need to put forth more effort. This should not be the case since 'faculty provide a major link between students and administration. Kathy Bacon (1) Student interests and goals are undeniably linked with the courses taken and therefore with the academic curriculum. As no one can better represent and stand up for student interest and goals than students themselves, it follows that they should have a role in plan ning the academic curriculum. (2) Salem can be a meaningful combination of past, present, and future, as we learn from the past, yet must live our own lives and at the same time prepare for the future. (3) I don’t think it would be a good idea. Communications and active campus involvement would be much more difficult than at present and class closeness would be harmed. (4) I approve. We can drink on campus, so why not be able to buy beer on campus, especially since the student center is there for our enjoyment and it would be an appropriate place. Noise, etc. there wouldn’t interfere with studying and other dorm activities. (5) For reasons of safety and security, especially involving SDH, I think sign out cards and sheets are needed, but if an alternate system could be devised, they could be eliminated or made optional. (6) Yes, to better understand us, but it should be a two-sided agreement and not in a dictator’s role. (8) At home most of us are allowed some privacy with our dates. With reasonable limits and individual responsibility, Salem shouldn’t fall apart as a result of this change. (9) Better, more efficient communication would be preferable to greater quantity. (10) Basically Founder’s Day provides a chance for the Classes to work together toward a common goal, with the competition giving the incentive to work. (11) It is satisfactory, but it could be better. Faculty at lunch rath er regularly should be helpful here. Margaret Brinkley (2) Salem has a rich traditional heritage, and I think that all of these traditions could remind us of the sense of community and val ue of friendship that we often forget in our rush-rush modem world. Coming together to participate in these traditional events brings us together in fun as we should do with much more frequency. (3) Although I believe that Seniors in college have every right to choose whether they will live on or off campus I wouldn’t like to see-Salem lose any of the closeness and unity she now has because we all live together and know each other well. I am also opposed to the size of the student body increasing beyond its present number, and I’m afraid expansion would be inevitable if Seniors moved off- campus and left vacant dorm rooms. (5) I honestly believe that Salem students are mature and respon sible enough to leave their own messages so that they might be reached in case of an emergency. Being able to contact a student in emergencies has been the major argument in maintaining the present system, but 1 believe that a student’s whereabouts are her own re sponsibility. (6) Student affairs refers to all areas where the Student Govern ment of Salem has a right to power. Since these affairs - dorm life, social restrictions, honor system, etc. - are under the students’ government,! don’t think that the college president should be direct ly involved. I do realize that he may be needed as a consultant or advisor in major decision-making, and he must be kept well-informed on student affairs, but he should not have sole control in all student affairs. (7) Petitions indicate the general feelings of the students about an issue and because they are student initiated and student executed there is generally a real need for change in the area of the petition II It is completed. I do think that questionnaires and polls can give inore specific information on the issue once the petition has raised that issue. Joan Spangler (3) I approve, if all concerned are aware of her residency (6) Define the terms involved and “student affairs”. He should be aware of student activity. (8) Disapprove - unless hours of visitation are limited. (9) Our clubs, etc. try to communicate, it’s up to each student to read and listen. (10) Continued - in a fun and “celebrating” way. (11) Communication? Yes. Mary Lou Cunningham (9) Same - there has been a lot done this year to improve this. Sarah Tucker I believe that question number 8 is a personal question. I do not cl If she n' elert°dt ^"^er into her ottice If she IS elected by a group of people, it is her duty to renre- sent ftem to the best of her ability. This would definitely incLe potine he, own personal opinions and relaying only the options of the people she is representing. 1, is also her duty to fM out and SLms " of .he stude„“ * Issues Cindy Lovin (4) (8) It’s a great idea, but it won’t keep girls here on the weekend I approve of limited visitation. weexena. Barbara Perry (4) Approve - if another place is provided for miipt t lu- watching TV. tor quiet talking or (5) 11 is necessary to keep track of dorm keys. Continued on p. 7 Continued from p, s rule infractions, I can say with no second thoughts that aU l have seen handled have been treated as fairly as circumstances would permit. However, I do not feel that the ones that have been handled are the problem, but the ones that haven’t been handled - with strong emphasis on in fractions of academic honor which were rumored but never verified. (10) I don’t see IRS as directly concerned with Salem honor, but do see it as trying (some times in vain) to create or main tain a little sophistication and sentimentality to some of Sa lem’s traditions. I do think that clubs (budget organizations, mainly) should continue to sup’ port activities for all students -especially if students help fi- nance these clubs through SGA fees. (11) I think the new plan of cafeteria style lunches and fam ily style dinners sounds practical and more efficient. I am against having cafeteria style dinner at night because it is nice to be able to sit down and relax while eat ing at the end of a long day and talk with others rather than eat ing at different times all day and standing in line to get your own - basically, I am lazy, and espe cially by then. (12) Yes - it could be run for longer periods of time, with a httle more publicity, and for greatest value to students, could be the sole handler of used books. (In other words, rather than the bookstore.) (13) To a great extent so that calendars, publicity, types of ac tivities, and other plans can be cleared and handled most effec tively for student involvement. (14) Yes, because without that money (1) clubs would not be able to sponsor and finance as many programs, and (2) students would not have the sense of be longing to the clubs they want. (15) The president of SGA, is left too many times in a position where she alone must hear in formation and make decisions on it. This is not fair to the person serving as SGA president or to the student body. I am suggest ing that the student body be more directly involved in re laying their feelings about mat ters to the president so that she does not end up in the touchy situation of making statements and decisions which are neces sarily of a personal nature rather than a reflection of student opin ion. Le Newell I would mention a closet (1) _ sense of community, better op portunities for knowing different people in the different classes, close friendships with teachers traditions, honor code, sen scheduling exams, advantages o 4-1-4 and summer opportuni ties in Italy and Norway. (2) Where there is a high-nsK situation on need, there nee s to be confidential help within reach. There is a problem of ' nance were we to have facility nearby and free ° charge. ’ (3) There must be an ettec- five alternative to this ineffectw^ and trivial system. Perhaps w® Continued on p- 1
