(4) Yes, if we, the student gov ernment need their advice. As it stands now the SGA President meets with Dr. Chandler once a week. Perhaps in rebuilding our foundations we need to be ad vised and helped in the re-evalu ation process. (5) Yes. The link should also include the relationship between the faculty and students. (6) 1 believe so and admire the members of this board very much. (7) Our honor code is only as strong as we are. If we fail to accept the responsibility dicta ted by it, then we deny our selves self-government and the freedom of self-scheduling ex ams. (8) The essence of the honor code is in the individual respon sibility. We must assume this responsibility in order to remain self governing. Without this re sponsibility our government and honor system will err ode. (9) There is no way to know if rule infractions have been han dled too hghtly or too harshly this year without having been on the judicial boards or a friend who was being punished. This question is invalid. (10) IRS has an important role. This issue is how effective is she in upholding honor and tra ditions? 1 believe that IRS should continue as an organization and I’m glad that she is spreading the events out over the year, rather than concentrating them into one weekend in April. (11) This is not an important issue in running for chairman of Honor Council - I’m not sure how financially feasible this is and with our facilities it would ^make more confusion than we have. (12) The only way in which the book exchange will work is by having someone who cares about it enough to spend the time and energy organizing it. Without this person why not sell your books individually or to the book store. (13) Clubs should work togeth er for communication to as great an extent as possible through Interclub Council. This council, for best communication and scheduling of projects and events should include club presidents and class presidents. (14) No. This would possibly mean that some of the clubs would fold but perhaps lack of participation in or interest justi fies the club’s termination. (15) I will accept the responsi bility for upholding the Honor Code and will enforce Salem’s regulations, having re-evaluated their appropriateness, so that we might not lose our privilege of governing ourselves. I especially advocate individual responsibili ty and fair justice as our founda tions. Questions; (1) If you were asked to des- cribe Salem to an outsider, what would you tell her? (2) Are you in favor of or op posed to family planning facili ties on campus? Continued from p. 6 (8) Approve - if limited to weekends or to certain dorms. Amy Robertson Approve -- in a limited way. Mary Ann Campbell (2) I personally would like to see some of Salem’s traditions con tinued, such as the Sophomore Class Banquet, Parents’ Weekend, and Senior Follies. I do not, however, support continuing a tradition merely for the sake of tradition when there is a lack of student inter est and participation. (3) I favor giving students the option of living off campus their senior year. A twenty-one year old student should certainly be able to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of dorm life, and make her own decision as to where she chooses to live. (4) I approve of making the Student Center into a Tavern where beer can be sold although I do not feel that this will be the total answer to keeping students at Salem on weekends. (5) Signout cards for overnights are necessary in that the student needs to leave a phone number where she can be reached in case of an emergency. As long as a SDH key is not involved, I feel that sign out sheets for evening engagements are unnecessary; the girl’s room mate or friends will nearly always know where she is. (6) “Student affairs” needs to be defined. A college president ob viously should express an interest in student activities and projects. However, areas that are delegated to student control, such as Inter dorm’s regulation of social infractions, should be left entirely to stu dent discretion. (8) I support limited weekend visitation at Salem because I feel that those students who favor visitation have as much of a right to their choice as do those who oppose visitation. We at least should try visitation to see if it will or will not work at Salem. (9) Announcements at lunch have greatly improved student com munication; an active Interclub Council could help even more. Kathy Roberson (2) I see no reason not to continue most of Salem’s traditions al though some need a few alterations, (i.e. FITS) (3) I would approve of girls living off campus by their Senior year if it were possible for a college of Salem’s size to survive eco nomically or as a community if many of the girls moved off campus. (4) Selling beer would be fine, but I would hesitate to emphasize the beer part -1 would label it a Snack Bar where beer may be sold. (5) With dorms being run as they are, sign outs are necessary. (6) To be an effective administrator he has to be directly involved with the community and its affairs. (7) The petition is probably the most effective instrument of communication but it shouldn’t be the only such instrument. (9) More communication through the same means. (10) Continued with a few alterations. (11) The relationship is satisfactory but we should want and have more of a relationship. Paula Jeffords (8) I firmly believe that a student body officer is elected for the service of the students she represents. Personal feelings step into the background. For this reason, I did not answer this question with a simple yes or no. I want to always try to be open and aware of the feelings of the student body. Cyndy Patterson (1) I think it is unfair to have to answer these questions; this does not fully represent my opinion, and some of the questions such as number 5 I feel differently about each part. (10) Same as this year: with the skits no longer competitive. Betsy Hester (6) Yes, but not controlling them. (7) Yes, but it needs supplements and improvements. Clark Kitchen: (1) By all means they should have a voice, and one that is heard. (2) Of course tradition should be carried on at Salem - what is any long-standing institution without it? People must distinguish be tween nec. and obsolete tradition. (3) I do not disapprove. (4) That would be a great thing, if it drew enough interest. (5) Perhaps they shouldn’t be mandatory, but it is useful at times to be able to find students. (6) He should be informed of student affairs such as their atti tudes towards campus life and the general feelings of students. (8) With stipulations, I approve. (9) The same amount, but more organized so mix-ups don’t occur. (10) It should be up to the students each year to decide. I would hke it continued, but altered. Susan Wooten (8) Unable to answer yes or no. Beverly Leonard (8) I do not think my personal opinion should matter on this ques tion. If elected to this office-1 will work for the wants of the stu dents who elected me and not for my own interests. Scottie Boardman (3) I feel that girls their senior year could accept the responsibility of living in an apartment. (4) Selling beer in the Student Center would make many more students go to the Student Center, but I do not feel it would make and difference to students leaving on weekends. (5) I feel sign-out sheets are necessary, not for tracing a student down, but for searching in case of an emergency. (6) A college president has the authority to be a part of student affairs concerning academics, curriculum, etc. However, I feel social ly and otherwise, the president should not be as directly involved as they are more for students. (11) Salem’s student-faculty relationship is satisfactory; but I feel it could be improved somewhat to become even better. Lucy Rose (8) I don’t feel my opinion on this question should matter. If elected I will represent the majority of students at Salem and do my very best to vote as I feel the majority desires. Leigh Thurston (4) Yes, but I don’t think it will keep people here. (8) Approve - limited. Wendy Wyckoff (8) Approve - limited. Debbie Knight (4) Approve - if the majority of students desire this. (8) Yes - limited amount on weekends. (1) All of my answers are of course my own opinions. However, if elected as secretary of Interdorm, I will try to represent the stu dents and uphold their opinions. Beth LaFitte (4) Approve — although 1 don’t think it will keep students here on weekends. '(5) Necessary - in cases of emergency particularly. (10) Should be continued. (3) How do you feel about the call-down system? , (4) Should the SGA president ' work closely with the President and the faculty-advisory board? (5) Should the students have a faculty advisory board as a link between students and administra tion? (6) Does our faculty-advisory board operate successfully at present? (7) Is Salem’s honor system valid? (8) How could our honor sy stem be made more (if neces sary) effective? (9) Do you think rule infrac tions this year have been handled too harshly or too lightly in general? (101 Does IRS have an impor tant role in upholding Salem honor and traditions? And should IRS continue as an organ ization for all students? (11) Do you think Salem should switch to cafeteria food ser vice ... explain your reason. Do you think the book ex- could be run more ef ficiently? If so, how? (13) To what extent do you think clubs should work together for communication? (14) Do you think club fees should be included in SGA fees? (15) How can you make your position (if elected) more effic- ent? (12) change Vice-President SGA Margaret Brinkley (1) Since Salem is a.small, pri vate, girls’ school, it’s amazing to discover the “un-stereotyped” girl that comes to school ii>ye. I was really surprised to tmd such a “cross-section” of girls at Salem in spite of our similar socio-economic situations, simi lar academic achievements, etc. At Salem there seems to be re spect for differing opinions, dif fering values . . . even differing ways of dress! No McMullen blouses and pearls for every Sa lem girl these days! Yet, there is a common background to draw us into a close-knit community where we are able to share and enjoy many of the same. (2) In today’s terribly over crowded world, family planning is one immediate means of con trolling the population for the sake of our future survival. Shouldn’t Salem students (sup posedly the coming leaders in our modern society) be aware of this need and well-informed in this area so as not to contribute to the problem? The more avail able family planning services are, the more they will be used. (3) Call downs are regarded rather lightly by Salem students, and no one considers a call down real punishment. In most cases, they serve only as warnings, and maybe this is a legitimate pur pose for the system, instead of a five-minute leeway period after closing time, a call down is given as a warning for being late. In stead of complaints about unne cessary noise, call downs can be given as warnings. Call downs aren’t serious punishment, but is that their purpose? (4) The SGA president must work closely with the President and faculty-advisory board to re present the entire student body’s interests in administrative deci sions. Sufficient communication between administration and stu dents is absolutely essential to the understanding and solution of problems. Although the SGA president, by nature of her posi tion, must represent the stu dents, she should not be expec ted to act as a messenger for administrative decisions when di rect and more frequent commu nication from the President to students could often clear matter. Particularly at Salem where student-faculty relationship more than a social security number on a grade book, the fac ulty should be involved as a link between students and administra tion.
