New dates for the testing of prospective teachers are: Novem ber 10, 1973, and January 26, April 6, and July 20, 1974. The tests will be given at nearly 500 locations throughout the United States, ETS said. The Salemite ha.s been experiencing an economic up heaval of its own with the same disastrous entanglements presently found in the inflationary state of the country. In the succession of staff members which occurs annually, un familiarity with the proceedings of the previous stafl' results. It is not perhaps the most efficient method for organizing a college newspaper; but, the turnover of stu dents leaving school and the addition of students in the fall necessitates that the paper have a new staff each academic year. Conseciuently, substantial debts may be incurred by a pi-evious staff unknown to their inheritors. Unfortunately, the present members of The Salemite staff have found themselves in such a position. As a result of last year’s overspending, the newspaper is in debt to the college foi- the large sum of $869.00. This debt must be paid immediately once appropriate funds are obtained. Every yeai- the Student Government As.sociation allocates $2,500.00 to The Salemite. This amount is the I)aper’s share of the $49.00 fee collected from each student at Registi-ation. Although this amount will cover the debt owed to the college. The Salemite will be left operating on two-thirds of the spending budget it has had in previous years. The college newspaper predictably counts on an addi tional $2,200.00 pel’ year from advertisements and subscrip tions. However, advertising revenue will decrease this year with a reduction in the size of the newspaper itself. This .vear the newspaper will be published in editions of four pages instead of an eight jiage edition. At half the size of last year’s imiier, we can subsequently expect half as many ads jier week in the paper. As a standard procedure, we do limit the amount of advertising space available in the paper to 25' of the total column inches. Even with the publication of a smaller newspaper, there •still exists a struggle to continue the paper as a weekly. ■Newsprint, the actual paper on which the newspaper is published, i.s cpiite scarce. Printing costs have gone up, exemplary of the rising costs for services which the entire country is experiencing. In an eflort to conserve the quality of the newspaper the stalf has adopted its own Phase IV. A change in format has been approved. This year the newspaper will be publish ed on glossy paper as opposed to newspi-int for the reasons iuready mentioned. The printing company has been changed to a cheapei- firm in Winston-Salem. The paper will be tour pages in hopes that it can continue as a weekly. There will be no syndicated copy such as “Campus Colloquy” Intercollegiate Press SyndicaW .ind the Alternative Features Service. The Salemite will be completely a student newspaper, comprised of student contributions for copy. Luuem ^ The business stalf has plans for several fund-raisinL^ piojects to help alleviate the financial situation. The staff has also placed a petition before the Concessions Committee toi a contribution to the newspaper. Some colleges also require all seniors preparing to teach to take the examinations. The school systems and state de partments of education which use the examination results are listed in an NTE leaflet entitled Score Users which may be obtained by writing to ETS. On each full day of testing, prospective teachers may take the Common Examinations which measure their professional prep aration and general educational background and an Area Exami nation which measures their mas tery of the subject they expect to teach. Prospective teachers should con tact the school systems in which they seek employment, or their colleges, for specific advice on which examinations to take and on which dates they should be taken. The Bulletin of Information for Candidates contains a list of test centers, and information about the examinations, as well as a Registration Form. Editor’s Note: Mrs. Lucille Vest Scott, a professor at Salem College for 36 years, passed away August 21 following surgery at Forsyth Hospital in Winston- Salem. Mrs. Scott was a 1930 graduate of Salem College. She held the M.A. degree in French and Spanish from the University of North Carolina— Chapel Hill. She was appointed an instructor in the modern language department in 1936. The following is a tribute to Mrs. Scott written by one of her students. What does one say in the wake of unexpected death? The recent death of Lucile V. Scott was a shock to ail who knew and loved her. Mrs. Scott was a professor of the highest caliber. She encouraged high goals of all her students and was, herself, a fine example of one who was truly devoted to her field. “You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give”, writes Kahil Gibran in The Prophet. Mrs. Scott gave kindness and understanding. She radiated her affection for the Spanish language and people, not only by sharing her knowledge and ex perience in class, but even by inviting her students into her home for festive Spanish cuisine. Lucile V. Scott truly gave me so many intangible aspects of herself that I shall always hold her memory very carefully in my heart. I bow my head in memory of a strong and gracious woman.
