Page Four Pageant, (cont'd.) (CoiitiiniiMl from I’aKC r)nc) Anne is a music major, who sings, plays the piano, and flute and has recently developed in terest in oboe. She displayed her talent Saturday night when she played a Gershwin Prelude on the piano. Other than music, the pretty brunette’s interests include swimming and skin-diving. Her energies seem endless, as she hardly sat still during our inter view; she stayed busy polishing her nails and bouncing to and from her closet to show her pageant wardrobe. Laura, is a home economics major at Salem with interest in reading, cooking, waterskiing, and painting. Her talent presentation was a dramatic interpretation of “Casey at the Bat.’’ In her southern drawl, she confided, “I'd known ‘Casey at the Bat’ since I was little, and I didn't really have anything else I wanted to do.’’ The striking blonde confessed that the whole pageant was more fun than she had anticipated. Along with the fun and excite ment of the pageants, Anne de clares that pageant-hopping is “an expensive business.’’ “I think I'm retiring after this one,’’ she concluded and Laura shares this sentiment. But first, Ann Poston will have to fulfill her term as first runner-up in the Miss Winston-Salem pageant. April Arts Kxliihits TH£ SAL€MIT€ Curriculum Requirement Due to Change Thursday, October H In its first meeting of the 1973-74 academic year, the Curriculum Committee voted upon two recom mendations to be presented be fore the Faculty. The Curriculum Committee recommended that the addition of a Mathematics 50 course be approved. This new course entitled Introduction to Mathematical Thought would be a non-computational introduction to some of the basic concepts and ideas of mathematics: logic, theo rems, proofs and applications. Examples in various branches of mathematics may be considered: algebra, graph theory, number theory, topology and computers. The course however cannot be applied towards a math major. The Curriculum Committee also recommended that the first sen tence in paragraph four, page 61, of the 1973-74 Salem College Cata log be amended to read as fol lows: The three required courses in Mathematics and / or Science may be selected from biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, and computer science. It is hoped that with the approval of this amendent the student would have greater variety in ful filling her math / science basic requirements.
