NEW COURTS
Come on down — the new courts
are open. Van Sumner has done
a great job providing us with six
more courts. However, they need
to be broken in, so all you avid
tennis players make your way
down to test them out. They are
made of a surface called “Lay-
kold” and are softer than the old
ones. Here are a few requests we
are making to keep the courts in
good playing condition.
1. People entering the courts
must wear a smooth sole tennis
shoe. Footmats are at the gate
entrances to prevent rocks from
getting on the playing surface.
Wipe your feet.
2. In order to prevent pulling
the net posts, after playing be
sure to release the tension of the
net. Do not adjust the center
straps, but release the tension by
lowering the net via flipping the
catch on the handle of the left
net post.
3. Metal rackets should be
equipped with a plastic guard on
the frame to prevent cutting or
scraping the surface on a low
ground stroke. These may be pur
chased at Bocock-Stroud for $1.00.
Thanks for cooperating and
have a good match.
GOLF
Salem College has started a
golf program in which players go
to Grandview Golf Course and
play nine holes of golf every
Wednesday. We’ve gone for the
past five weeks and have had so
much fun. There has been a lot of
student response, but we will
gladly welcome any new faces.
As a special attraction, several
of our faculty members who play
golf are joining us in a Student-
Faculty Golf Day. This date is
Wednesday, 13 November. If you
would like to play in this — just
for fun — please see Roxanne
Hicklin or Miss Woodward as soon
as possible.
TENNIS TOURNAMENTS
The Class Singles Tennis Tour
naments finished up with winners
from the Freshman, Sophomore,
and Junior classes. The final
games were held on the new
courts with Miss Woodward giving
the trophies to both winner and
runner-up. Bett White played
Kathy Fant for the Freshman
finals, with Bett winning 6-2, 6-1.
Sally Hall and Patrice Mann com
peted for Sophomore honors, with
Sally winning 6-3, 6-3. Lucy vs
Lucy was the match for the
Juniors. Miss Lane defeated Miss
Rose 6-1, 6-1. Thanks to all the
participants and spectators for
your support. I hope you enjoyed

HOCKEY TEAM
Remember the “puck pushers”
(or actually ball pushers) men
tioned in last week’s paper? Well,
the victorious action has come
alive with the Field Hockey Team
winning their first two games and
tieing their third. We “rolled in”
to Danville to greet matching
tunics and half of a field. Averette
donned pennies while we tried to
cut our sticks down to half
power. Kathy Watkinson and Lucy
Lane managed to slip a couple
past Averette’s goalie, so we said
good bye to the tacky, twinsy
tunics with the 2-0 victory sup
porting us. We left our mark at
Hardee’s and bumped down the
road in our school van.
Tackle Guilford we did with
stunning stickwork, daring
dodges, fantastic flicks, super-
dooper scoops, and pushy passes.
Kathy Watkinson stole the show
with four goals to her credit —
Lucy Lane sending in the fifth.
Guilford’s Hardee’s was the lucky
place to get our business this
time. With the manager being so
nice, we were stuffed in no time
and moving down the road in our
caravan of the tank, the “Cadil
lac” of school cars, and the yellow
bird.
The team next went to battle on
home ground against Averette.
Much to our surprise, the spec
tators were overwhelming. We
had never before had such sup
port. Keep it up — we love it.
Lucy Lane whacked in our only
goal of the game, with their
center forward breaking into the
open to score their one for the
afternoon. Hang in there defense
— it was the first of the season,
and hopefully the last score
against us. The refectory took
care of the chow for both teams,
serving ice cream and chocolate
sauce — our favorites. Thanks for
your support, Ted.
Check the schedule in your dorm
for our next game. Come give us
a cheer.

Inter-Varsity Is
Alive On Campus
By Pat Hall
What does it mean? Who’s it
for? What does it do? Three im
portant questions when trying to
evaluate a club on campus. Inter-
Varsity Christian Fellowship —
you heard about it at the SGA
meeting. Something about a con
stitution. Well, the constitution
needs to be passed by the student
body. That’s you and me. And
when we make a decision we
should be well informed. Hope
fully this article will help to make
aware to each and everyone of us
what InterVarsity is and has to
offer.
Physically, it is a group of girls
on this campus that have joined
together for Christian fellowship
and growth. Evangelism, mission,
and discipleship are three import
ant words in its structure. Sounds
rather heavy, but actually is real
ly down to earth. The group seeks
to develop, deepen, and strengthen
their faith in Jesus Christ and
their lives through study of the
Bible and prayer. As Christians
we experience the love of God
through fellowship and worship.
What does all this mean to you?
It means that here on campus you
have the opportunity to partici
pate in Christian fellowship. This
may prove to be a rewarding ex
perience to you. These meetings
are open to everyone: the group
is interdenominational and wel
comes all (including interested
faculty members). Campus chap
ter meetings are every other
Tuesday at 7:00 on the third floor
of the library. All interested per
sons meet together to sing, share,
introspect on some topic, and
pray. Often speakers bring the
message or a program is pre
pared by several students.
InterVarsity offers a lot outside
of the big meetings. Bible studies
are held in each dorm one evening
a week. In Bitting dorm the study
is led by Sarah Tucker on Thurs
days at 10:00. In Babcock, Linda
Joynes begins that one at 10:00 on
Thursdays. Carey Baumgarten in
Clewell gets that one moving at
10:00 on Thursdays too. Gramley
has two: one on Monday night at
10:00 led by Kit Lombard and one
on Thursday night at 10:00 led by
Lucy Rose.
Dick Nangel, who is our Inter
Varsity staff member, leads a
Bible study on alternating Tues
days and Wednesdays on the third
floor of the library and Alumnae
House respectively. A prayer
meeting is held every Thursday
in the chapel at 1:15 for general
prayer during the day. This allows
a time to come before the Lord
with any problems one might
have. Prayer Breakfasts are due
to start up again soon. Those that
participated last year can tell you
what a great way it is to start
the day. Also, an InterVarsity
song group has started up to sing
and share Christian music. It
meets Thursday night at 8:00 in
the chapel.
If you have any questions about
InterVarsity that you would like
