Having been Secretary of Honor i I have realized even rp how honor permeates every : "life m n I petitioned for Chair- of Honor Council in order to “ve Salem in this capacity. honor council SECRETARY ginger HARRIS My name is Ginger Harris and . am petitioning for the office of Secretary of Honor Council. This Jice, in my opinion, is just as important as the chairmanship, secretary is charged with up- ^ the honor code as is every student. She must take ac curate notes at all meetings and tearings. This is extremely im plant because correct and ac curate notes are essential in re viewing cases in the present or if need arises to use them for reterence in the future. Also the leeretary must notify all persons uvolved in a case prior to their learing. She must also take care if any routine correspondence for le Council. All notes, correspond- me, and activities of the Council !te confidential and of course I ill comply with this. am willing to commit myself I plus to the duties of Secre tary of Honor Council. I promise to keep extremely accurate notes, be very prompt with all cor respondence. I want to serve you am willing to serve you and 1 feel I can do so as Secretary of Council. On this you have my honor. TH£ SALtMiTt Moving Right Along Page Five PAGE OUVE I am running for the office, of Secretary of Honor Council be cause I would like to help per petuate the Honor Code System. The system is unique in that it works very efficiently, and I would like to see it continue to work. Further, I feel that I could benefit the Honor Council due to my experience working in Group Insurance Underwriting at Inte- gon Corporation for two years. This experience gave me an un derstanding of the organization and details of getting a job done. In regard to changing student government, I feel that I must study the issues more thoroughly before taking a definite position. However, some change is need ed to enable students to have a choice and a voice in government, so that the needs of each individ ual may be considered. LYNN KNOX If elected Secretary of Honor Council, I feel that I could make position more efficient by ful- ™g the duties that are expect- j of nie and living up to my role “ my best potential. I believe “at the Honor System in itself “ based on the idea of trust and ^ common bond lies between each and every of us. Honor Council is not 0 ype of organization that more ™ ^t^ofsnts would want to be- 0 more involved in. If you your trust in me, I will try tnu you to the best of ability. The present system is fine until apathy ap pears and then something seems wrong. I think it is especially im portant that the representatives to the Senate be willing to take on added responsibility in voting objectively. I like the proposed idea toat anyone might petition a decision made by the Senate, and that with a certain percentage of names an appeal to the decision may be made. This way allows anyone a chance to voice their opinion and possibly stir up more interest. KAREN SMITH The honor system at Salem asks each student to abide by the highest standards of honesty and integrity in her academic work, social relations and personal life. It is a responsibility — along with which goes a responsibility — for us to be able to operate on such a system. I am running for Secretary of Honor Council because I would like to be a part in upholding the Honor tradition at Salem. SENIOR HONOR COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVE BEBE AYCOCK If elected as Senior Represen tative to Honor Council, I intend to be as objective as possible in making suggestions to the Honor Council on the various issues that come before the Council. I feel that I will be able to examine the total view of the meaning of Hon or. Salem’s Honor Tradition has been respected by all, but this Tradition is only as strong as we, the students, make it. I wish for this allegiance towards Honor to continue. The Honor Tradition a Salem is one thing that binds al students together at Salem; there fore, everyone is involved. After considering many pros and cons in relation to the idea of a Senate at Salem, I feel that a LORI FURCHES Salem College — nestled within the restored Moravian community of Old Salem, has been looked on for centuries as a reputable, sound, strong institution. Tradi tional heritage plays an important part in many of Salem’s patterns and lifestyles. The traits and characteristics considered admir able of a mature person are em phasized in all areas of our student life. We, as students, need to re examine our own styles of living to determine whether or not we are truly exhibiting behavior pat terns that measure up to the qualities expected of Salem stu dents. The Honor Code, as it is upheld by each student, will con tinue to be the basis of Salem life only as long as the students take honor seriously. It is in running for the office of Representative of the Senior Class on Honor Council that I feel I can best serve Salem by supporting the Honor Code. CINDY COTHRAN If elected as Senior Class Rep resentative, I would strive to the best of my ability to serve as a responsible, impartial represent ative of my class in all functions of the Honor Council. I would carry out my responsibility to the concerns of the Senior Class, to support the integrity of my fellow students, and to uphold the stand ards of Salem College. As for type of student govern ment, I favor the present S.G.A. system. As Salem students, we possess the right and privilege to become personally involved in campus life. It is our responsibil ity to stay informed, and to take an active part in campus govern ment — whether as officers or responsive fellow students. For me, and I expect for many others, this opportunity for individual participation and recognition greatly influenced my choosing to come to Salem. Lately, apathetic attitudes have hindered the effectiveness of S.G.A. True,.a Senate would be a convenient, efficient answer to the problem of quorums and stu dent passivity, but could easily lend itself later to further de pendence on the responsibility of only a few. S.G.A. can provide much better exposure to campus activity; and for all who take ad vantage of their privilege to par ticipate, better representation. To drop the S.G.A. system, there fore would be to shrink our re sponsibility and to forsake those privileges of participation which make Salem so unique. JUNIOR HONOR COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVE HARRIET POWELL If elected as Jr. Represent ative to Honor Council, I will try to consider all aspects of every case brought before the Council. I think it is important to consider circumstances and motivations in reviewing various cases. An other important responsibility of Honor Council Representatives is not to allow personal feelings to interfere in decisions but to uphold and reinforce Salem’s honor tradi tion at all times. I will endeavor to live up to this responsibility. I am in favor of continuing student body government instead of the Senate if possible because it allows interested students to vote on all issues. Another ad vantage of this system is that it creates more awareness of what is going on in student government. However, I think if the present method is ineffective and students desire a change, the Senate sys tem is worth more consideration. dents are upholding our Honor Tradition. BETSY WEBSTER Friday, February 21 was a mo mentous occasion in my life be cause I decided to petition for Junior Representative to Honor Council. The day began as any other Friday as I dragged myself out of bed in the wee hours of the morning—8:30. I grabbed on the ole gray gym suit for Body Mechanics and ran to breakfast. Once there, I stretched out two waffles, milk and orange juice as long as possible so as to postpone the inevitable—Math 10. I finally survived Math and crawled thru the blood, sweat and tears to Body Mechanics. There, I ran two miles, did two thousand exercises and finally collapsed on the gym floor. After I recovered somewhat I jogged to lunch. Lunch was as exciting as usual, and I sat with all my friends (at a table by my self in the back). It was there that I made my decision: Salem has so much more to offer. Why don’t I take advantage of that? I’ll bebop over to Clewell and pe tition for Honor Council Repre sentative and that is exactly what I did. Seriously, I feel that the Honor Tradition is very important at Sa lem, and to defend this Honor Tradition, an efficient and dis creet Honor Council is essential. Whether we at Salem retain our present student government sys tem or change to a Senate sys tem, we all need to show more enthusiasm and responsibility. Any type of government will fail without support. As an Honor Council Representative I would add the qualities of enthusiasm, responsibility, and compassion to the council to the best of my abilities. I do not want to involve anyone else in Honor Council pro ceedings—the less cases there are the better we as Salem stu- MELANIE WYATT I consider it a privilege to have been nominated by the Legislative Board to run for Junior Repre sentative to the Honor Council. If elected I will fulfil the duties of my position to the best of my ability. .1 value the standards that Salem’s Honor Code repre sents; therefore, I believe that I can make decisions when neces sary to help perpetuate this honor tradition. I do not favor changing Salem’s student government, simply be cause we have such a small student body. It is my opinion that people will take the oppor tunity to know what’s happening by going to SGA meetings if they are truly interested. Since it is the only time that we are all together, it is the only time to make decisions and yes announce ments that involve the entire stu dent body. SOPHOMORE HONOR COUNCIL REPRESENTATIV KATHY KING I’ve decided to run for sopho more representative to Honor Council because I believe in the idea of a student court such as this as opposed to one made up strictly of the administration. I feel that a court made up of stu dents is important for three rea sons: 1. Having the responsibility of deciding on the fair treatment of fellow students who have broken rules tends to make student court members more mature, respon sible people. 2. Student court members are better able to empathize with fel low students than the administra tion because they are about the same age as the girls that they would be trying. 3. Knowing that they will be tried by their own peers if they are accused of lying, cheating, or stealing makes students less like ly to do these things because of the fact that our peers’ opinion of us means a lot to us. Because I feel a student court is important. I’d like to help make one work here at Salem. I hope that, if I am elected, I can help make sure that Honor Council is always a fair organiza tion of people that listen open- mindedly to both sides of a case before passing judgment. Further, I hope that I can help make it an organization that doesn’t just de cide the consequences for a girl who is found to have lied, cheated, or stolen, but that goes a step further aind tries to help the girl understand that it’s important that she not do these things be cause of the damage to her and to others, plus her infringement on the rights of others. In short, I’d like to help make Honor Coun cil always be an organization not just concerned with rules them selves but with the reasons for the rules and with the welfare of the people that live under these rules. As for the question that has been raised of whether to keep
