The continued success of sleeping pill manufacturers never ceases to amaze me. After all, why should anyone take a potentially habit-forming drug to induce sleep when all around her a permanent cure for insomnia masquerades as public speaking. I refer to the countless unin spiring speeches delivered with increasing regularity by even less inspiring speakers, many of whom are, unfortunately, in leadership positions which require periodic addresses. One contributing factor to the dearth of good orators may be the lessening emphasis on good English usage in the schools. Just as one cannot become an expert tennis player without first learning the rules, so one cannot become an adept writer or speaker without firat learning the rides of grammar and com position on which the language is based. The ability to use the English language effectively is requisite to conveying one’s ideas, even in daily conversation. Yet, every year more and more students graduate from high schools (and are admitted to colleges) without even knowing the basic parts of £^)eech. Fortimately, one can still Qnd some practitioners of good English usage and excellent oratory to remind us of what might be. Witness U.S. Representative Barbara Jordan who mesmerized the nation with her eloquent and inspiring ad dress to the 1976 Ilemocratic National Convention. Qoser to home, former Academic Dean Jan Somerville was a refreshing ray of light in an otherwise oratorically dark administration. Is there hope for a renaissance of skillful oratory after the murky rhetoric of the dark ages to which we have become ac customed, or shall we join those who have been mourning the demise of oratory for years? -Sandra Spear NOTE: This writer makes no claims to having reached perfection in her writing, but she is trying. Salutes This week, S.G.A. salutes all students, who gave blood when the Red Cross Bloodmobile was on campus. Sept. 26. Dear Editor: This letter is in response to Dr Dudley D. Shearbum’s jLetter iii the Sept. 23 issue of The Salemite Writing letters to the editor enables students and facultjf! to express their opinions. One can assume that what is said is opinion without having to use introductory statements such as “I think” and “In my opinion," Obviously it is one’s opinion and obviously one is thinking it if one writes it. If my first impression of the faculty retreat was inac curate, I certainly am not so close-minded as not to listen to the opinions and impressions of others. My views to scrnie extent were shaped by the fact that my mother is a teacher ane I know how much she dislikes to be surrounded by school all .the time. The faculty and students of Salem do not need to be surrounded by. each other and by Salem Ccdlege all the time, Community is important, but it should not swallow up the in dividual. As for opening convocation, it was a fiasco to me in light of other Salem convocations. Because Dr. Shearbum is a new faculty member, she has not seen other SALEM convocations. For three years, I had anticipated my senior convocation, and then I was disappointed by the lack of formality and by some of the speeches. This is not fact but my opinion. -Bedi Jones Restaurant Review By Eleanor E. Gibson Sam’s Canterbury Inn Club Haven Shopping Center Dear Mom and Dad, I thought I would tp^ to fiod a good place to eat in Winston- Salem so that I could take you there when you come to visit. Since I had heard nothing but praise about Sam’s Canterbury Inn, I thought I would try it. This eating establishment is especially noted for its boun® salad bar. Granted, the “up- petizer bar” looked appefcingi but, as the adage goes, “Yo“ can’t judge a book by its cover, Certainly it is impressive to serve such items as boUed shrWi oysters on the half shell, caviar, and pate on a salad bar, but wm they are tasteless or of P quality, it would be b®tter serve a simple, fresh ereengl^^ ^abmttT Smilov/ . .... published every Friday of ^ ^ f the College year by the Student Body of Salem College.
