\ Pure 2, Saiemite, February 16,1979 To The Editor... Dear Editor: As freshmen who have completed our first January term, we wish to express our satisfaction with the program as a whole. We feel that during January we have benefitted in several ways: getting to know more students on a closer basis, becoming more familiar with Winston-Salem, and taking a course which may not be offered during a regular semester. This program also relieved some of the mental pressures experienced during first semester. As a result of this program, we will be in a fresher state of mind for the Spring term. Although some people want to eliminate this program, we believe the amount of enrichment achieved by the. student is directly related to the effort given by the student. Therefore, this program is worthwhile for those who wish to gain more knowledge. If a greater range of subjects were offered more students would become involved in the January term. Since the survey was distributed before we had experienced a January term, we wanted to express our opinion now that we know more about this program. I am a freshman and before my first January Term I heard a lot of talk about it. Much of the talk about January Term concerned whether or not it should continue and other talk about the different classes offered. My impression of January Term (and of that of many people at schools without January Terms) beforehand was that of doing nothing but party all month without any work. Now that I have experienced a January Term I have changed my opinion. I did have classes to attend, books to read, projects and work to do. I enjoyed my class and really liked the idea of having one class to concentrate on and to learn from. The free time I had was a welcome to me and I enjoyed using it too. I hope others will express their feelings about January Term, either good or bad. Without true response from the students there will lack of change for the January Term. AUison White Dear Editor, The present situation of the student center needs the attention of ALL Salem College students. In the beginning of the year, many improvements were made such as the addition of a juke box, pool tables, several vending machines, and new futniture. Due to lack of interest and lack of participation by students, several of these things that I just mentioned no longer exist. If Salem students do not want to see the center closed down again, they need to take advantage of the facility before it is too late. Talk of a beer license has caught the attention of many students and perhaps if and when the talk becomes reality, more student involvement will take place. Unless something happens, it looks as though there will no longer be a Student Center at Salem. I would like to take this opportunity to urge everyone to please get involved, take advantage of our campus, and help get the Student Center back on its feet. Thank you. Sincerely, Diane Frantz Salem Soapbox ' As concerned students of Salem College we feel that there is a breakdow n of communication between the administration, the governing bodies of the college, and the student body at large. The students have a right to be better informed about decisions which are being made that affect their college careers. The lack of communication exhibited results in apathy among some students and in extreme concern among others. To help alleviate the problem we have developed a few suggestions, which are as follows: Leg. board has been ineffective in reporting to the student body the decisions being made in their meetings. Therefore, we suggest that a member of the board be appointed to summarize the issues discussed in each meeting. This report should also include the date, time, location, and issues to be discussed in the coming meeting; thus, allowing the students time to voice their opinions to their representatives. This information could then be printed in the school newspaper, to which all students have access. The same procedure should be followed by student- faculty committees. Every student is a member of SGA. Therefore, a general financial statement, aside from the 56 dollar student fee, should also be made available by the treasurer of SGA. Perhaps this could ^ be published in January. In the fall, a general account of the number of Honor Council infractions and penalties administered should be printed in the paper. In order for confidentiality to be respected, no names or details of the cases would be released. Yet by disclosing the nature of the case; i.e. lying, cheating, and-or stealing, the students would be made more acutely aware that infractions do occur and that action is taken against offenders of the Honor Code. In making these suggestions concerning the more efficient inform ity of the student body, it is our hope that more students will become concerned with the improvement of Salem College. Since all students have access to the school newspaper, everyone will have equal opportunity to receive all the important information concerning the issues on campus and to contribute their own ideas and efforts.
