these students may not be as

though the number of ap

Oslo
Scholars
Donna Savoca and
Katherine Fuller will be in
Oslo, Norway this summer as
Salem’s representatives to
the International Summer
School. Every summer the
summer school session is held
at the University of Oslo and
students from around the
world come to study the
culture, language, history,
geography and business
Practices of Scandinavia.
The scholarship is based on
a competitive basis. Students
who will be a rising junior or
senior may apply. They are
asked to write an essay on a
selected subject. Donna was
chosen as the rising junior.
She plans to take courses on
the History of Norway and
International Studies from a
Scandinavian Viewpoint.
Katherine’s courses include
Elementary Norwegian and
Norwegian Economics.
Donna and Katherine were
both happy and enthusiastic
over receiving the scholar
ships. They also plan to take
advantage of having the
opportunity of being abroad
by doing some extra
traveling.

considered that could raise
the enrollment number.
Also, the population of
North Carolina and the South
East is reportedly increasing.
Since Salem draws applicants
mainly from this region niore
applicants could possibly
result.
Beside the problem of a
possible decrease in
enrollment here are Salem
and elsewhere, an additional
problem in admissions is
attrition. Mrs. Jenkins said
that 20 percent of the student
body transfers each year. But
these transfers are not really
detrimental if they are sought
for the proper reasons. Mrs.
Jenkins speaks with tran
sferring students about their
reasons. She explains,
“students should be made
aware of what the last two
years at Salem can provide
for them.’’ She believes the
last years are the best. “I
hate to see some of the girls
miss out on the best year.’’
Mrs. Jenkins is confident
that Salem will be able to hold
it s own during any possible
enrollment crisis. Hopefully,
Salem will be able to continue
enrolling a satisfactory
number of qualified ap
plicants.
