News Beyond The Square Washington - The Supreme Court said Wednesday; that public figurfes who sue a journalist or new organization for libel mdy probe the “editorial process” that led to the allegedly libelous statement. The justices, voting 6-3, ruled that reporters and editors are not constitutionally protected from being forced to explain how they prepared a challenged report. They may be asked questions concerning their “state of rtind” during the preparation. For former Army Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Her bert, the decision was a big victory. Herbert is suing CBS and others in a $44.7 million libel action. However, the decision does not mean that the defendants have lost the case, which has not yet come to trial. The issue as it reached the Supreme Court was one of pre-trial procedure.; I This ruling means Herbert’s lawyers will, be able to ask at least some of the questions they previously have been barred from asking in pre-trial proceedings called “discovery” by the courts. Mississippi - Downstream from Mississippi’s capital, Jackson, thousands of residents fled Wednesday to escape record flooding of the Pearl River that already has cost half a billion dollars and displaced more than 17,000 people. In Alabama, hundreds more joined the 5,000 families in the Black Belt region who have abandoned homes to the rising water. This week’s floods in the Deep South have been blamed for at least five deaths. r April Arts Week L J HOMAGE TO SHAKESPEARE- Painting given to college by Mr. and Mrs. Ira Julian (Ruth), friends of the college in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Cuninggim. Update on Honors Seminars Spring Term was the beginning of a new program offered for the benefit of Salem’s honor students. The Honors Seminars was a project suggested when Dean Helmick arrived at Salem, in cooperation of the curriculum committee. It was felt that Salem needed courses geared toward the achieving students, outside of their normal workload. There is more to membership in an Honor Society than having your hame on a list, thus the concept of the Honors Seminars was born. The Honors Program exists to provide a formal op portunity for a high level of special study under the guidance of a Department for honors and for credit, for graduation. The requirements to participate are: 1) You must have a grade point average of 3.0. There is not a class privilege, any class may participate. 2) You must sign up for it and understand that it is not part of your curriculum. In speaking with Dr: Hill she was enthusiastic about the program. She said she has enjoyed the'students and the topic. The topic chosen this term was Imagination. The faculty themselves make their own groups and propose their topics to the curriculum committee for approval. The class decides when it will meet and what will be discussed within their topic. The professors in charge this time were Dr. Hill, Dr. Fay and Dr. Thompson. If you would like a student’s opinion who is participating in the program they are; Jo Beth Allen, Becky Baggett, Paula Ford, Sally Jordan, Donna Sharp, and Jennie Smith. The program is challenging and informative. Even though it is conducted in a more relaxed atmostphere of learning. The following course is offered as an in terdisciplinary honors seminar for the fall semester, 1979-80: Salem Honors II: “The Self and Contemporary Society” A focus on the various guests for self-image and self- awareness in coptemporary American society with particular emphasis on most recent decades. The in terdisciplinary approach will include the following topics: Contemporary Society; Coming Apart and Getting Together; Images of America; Creating an Image of Modern Man; The Unacknowledged Prophet: The Hidden Face of Charles Ives; The Symbols of our World in Story and Poem: Donald Barthelme and Wallace Stevens; False Images of Modern Science; The Centered Self: The Coming Together of Science and Religion. The faculty will include: Byers, Griffin, Harris, Helmick, Thompson, Triplette. Also one or two scientists will participate. The seminar will involve selected readings and perhaps some general studies such as Daniel Boorstin’s The Image: A Guide to Pseudo events in America.
