Never say There’s nothing to do... Social Activities Council Julia Owen fective performance. First meeting is TBA. SAC is an organization created to sponsor activities on campus that should enrich student life. Members of this committee are responsible for our Halloween Carnival, Christmas tree lighting, sponsoring mixers, supervising the Student Center and initiating various other Social activities. This com mittee also sets social standards and regulations for Salem Students. First meeting TBA. YWCA Melissa Cothran 107 South The YWCA seeks to stimulate personal thinking and active interest in con temporary concerns. It also seeks, creatively and vitally, to realize our aspirations toward greater knowledge of self and a better awareness of things larger than ourselves, these goals are attained through the many ac tivities and functions of the Y; raising money for charity through the Y-Auction ; the Orphan’s Party at Halloween; Johnny Jewels: campus beautification acivities and Belo Teas; the Easter Egg Hunt for underprivileged chil dren. The President and active members meet Weekly to carry out the basic planning and organization for the club. All interested students should come to the first meeting Monday, September 10 at 6:30. Patsy Miller ARCHWAYS 205 South The Archways is an independently organ ized, small choral group. Performances include presentations of Popular music for Various civic groups and Volunteer organizations throughout the Winston- Salem area, at various Campus events, and in two annual concerts. Archway vacancies are filled at fall or spring auditions, in which tbusical ability, vocal blend, and stage Presence are em phasized. Mandatory rehearsals are con ducted twice weekly or needed for an ef- Beth Tumage S.E.E.M. 204 South The Sociology, Economics, Economics- Management club is an organizaiton designed primarily to help in terested students learn more about career opportunities through meetings with in dividuals who represent different occupations, ranging from profit to nonprofit organizations and from public to private. SEEM also gives students an op portunity to become involved with . the community and in vestigate possible in ternships. Majors are particularly encouraged to join, but everyone is welcome. Meetings are held the second Wed nesday of each month, and submeetings will be held at different times throughout the year. CHORAL ENSEMBLE The purpose of the Choral Ensemble is to foster and stimulate interest in the vocal arts. Programs include entertainment for special events on campus such as the Christmas Candle Service, and for Win ston-Salem civic organizations and conventions. Whenever possible, the group makes a tour. The president is to be elected in the fall. Pierrettes Kathy Blades Sisters Pierrettes Players are the members of the drama club, Pierrettes. It is an organization that is open to ail students. We produce at least two productions each year. A common mistake among many people is that if you don’t get a “part” in the play it’s not worth your time. Many opportunities await you backstage! Since Salem is a small college you will 1^ able to participate in the “bringing together” of the show. Exciting and interesting prospects, such as set design and lighting design to name just a few, can be yours if you will just take the step. Come join us and make this year the best yet. The first production is “The Teahouse of the August Moon.” October 7-9. The first meeting is TBA. Stephanie King INTER VARSITY CHRISTIAN FELL OWSHIP 305 South IVCF started in England, on the cam puses of Oxford and Cambridge, over a century ago, as a non sectarian ministry to students. Today this contemporary organ ization is extending friendship, help, and guidance to students worldwide. In the U.S. alone. Intervarsity has a staff of over 250 working on 600 cam puses with more than 26,000 students. Today’s college student is at a serious, sometimes vital crossroads. Intervarsity offers a challenge to students as well as the help and opportunities to grow together as they seek to know God’s will. All IVCF activities will be publicized. LABLINGS Lablings is Salem’s organization respon sible for furthering interests in the scien tific field. The club does not restrict its mem bership to science majors but is open to all students. It is a member of the North Carolina Academy of Science which provides op portunities for un dergraduate scientific research, field trips, lecture programs, and participation in the spring annual meeting for those students wishing to present papers. Lablings offers a plant sitting service over the holidays. First meeting is TBA. home ECONOMICS CHAPTER The Home Economics Club is organized to foster activities among students interested in Home Economics and to provide an opportunity for professional growth in this field. Outside speakers, tours, and participation in the State Home Economics Convention extend the interests of the club off campus.- Activities around campus have included a Christmas tea centered around a Moravian theme and a homemade ice cream party. Susanne McCaskill DANSALEMS 203 South Dansalems, Salem’s modern dance society, seeks to develop an appreciation of modern dance, to develop adequate skills and creative ability, and to plan, choreograph, organize and present concerts. The officers. President, Secretary- Treasurer and Publicity Chairman, and Dan- salem members select, through auditions, new members each fall. In the past Dansalems has performed in special Christmas services, in local church services, and in assemblies. A spring concert is presented annually in Hanes Auditorium. Meetings are held weekly with dance in structor, Ms. Nan Rufty. Auditions are September 12. Big Four Lillian Goldthwaite 210 South Big Four is Salepi’s student organization which sponsors social activities as well as upholds the high social standards for which our college is recognized. The events which are the responsibility of the Big Four Committee are the Freshman Mixer, Inter club Weekend, Christmas and Valentines dances, and I.R.S. Weekend in the spring. The social life in a school of any size is as important to the development of a well rounded individual, as should be the academic experience. At Salem the role of a social organization such as Big Four takes on more importance, as we bring together students from other colleges which gives our students opportunities to go beyond the confines of our community. Beverly Williams W.R.A. The Women’s Recreational Associ ation is organized to stimulate interest in a program of wholesome physical activities, to promote recreational accomplishments, and to contribute to the development of the ideals of health and good sportsmanship. The cabinet, which meets twice a month to carry out basic planning and club organization, is formed from representatives from each class. First meeting is TBA. INTERNATIONAL CLUB The main purpose of the International Club is to encourage interest in the cultures, languages, and arts of different countries around the world. Every student is a member and is welcome to attend meetings in order to explore new countries (including their cuisine). Each meeting pertains to a specific country and to some distinguishing aspect of that country; such as, its architecture, unusual holidays, or interesting traditions. In addition, the Inter national Club joins in working with Salem’s foreign students in order to better un derstand their homelands. First meeting is TBA. Beth Rogers STUDENT NATIONAL EDUCATION ASSO CIATION 202 Bitting Salemite, September 7,1979, Page 3 The Johann Comenius Chapter of the Student National Education Association is a professional service organization seeking to provide its members with knowledge which will be beneficial to their future teaching professions. Speakers and special programs are planned for the monthly chapter meetings. The chapter sponsors the Johann Comenius Award for excellence in student teaching on the secondary level or in the field of learning disabilities, assists with the Teacher Education Tea for cooperating teachers and Winston- Salem - Forsyth County school administrators and participates in district and state professional meetings. All students interested in the teaching profession are urged to participate. First meeting is TBA. April Arts Club Chairman - Arie Tubb 8 Sisters April Arts is a club specializing in the arts and cultural events of Salem. Winston-Salem and the surrounding area. Anyone who is interested in any aspect of art, drama, music or dance is welcome. This year the club will be concentrating on student participation and attendance at the cultural activities availabe in the area. There will be sign-up sheets in the refectory for group trips to con certs, plays and art exhibits. There will also be a weekly column of events in The Salemite as well as bulletin boards in the refectory and the Back Door. In April the club sponsors a week of activities culminating in a “Festival in the Square.” The dates for 1980 are April 21-26. Our first meeting is Tuesday, Sept. 11, 5:00 p.m. at the Alumni House. Debra Emerson S.C.G.C. 102 Bitting The Salem College German Club is an organization designed to promote interest and participation in all aspects of German culture. SCGC also provides an opportunity in which the language can be practiced in formally. SCGC plans to sponsor activities which make these things possible, such as lec tures, films, and social activities. Meetings are held twice each month at a time designated by the President and Faculty Adviser. Orientation Discussion Announcement Although everyope may think orientation is over, there is still one important meeting left for the freshmen. The last program planned for the newcomers is Wednesday night, September 12. The faculty will conduct a discussion of ex pectations for the new students first year. The discussion begins at 6:45 and Babcock freshmen are to meet in the Terrace room and Clewell and Gramley freshmen meet in their respective recreation rooms. Everyone is encouraged to join with the freshmen for what ^should prove to be an " inspirational discussion. Joan Gantry Darlene Criswell MENC, Chapter 69 The purpose of the student chapter 69 of the Music Educators National Conference is to promote an interest in music as a fine art.
