Page 4, The Salemite, February 25,1983 New Award to Honor Salemite Reporter An award for journalism has been established by an anonymous donor in memory of Alicia Nancy Stephens who was director of public relations at Salem and ad visor to The Salemite from 1975 until her death on October 15, 1982. The Alicia Nancy Stephens \ward for Joimnalism will lonor a student who has iemohstrated outstanding mntributions and support to the advancement of quality reporting in The Salemite. The precision, competence, industry, and commitment to excellence which Nancy Stephens brought to all of her journalistic endeavors will be the criteria on which the award is made. Letters of nomination will be submitted by the staff of The Salemite and the faculty to Publications Board for review. The selection will be made by the Board and the award will be conferred at Honors Convocation in May Moore Named New Director Ms. Susan Brooks, Salem Academy and College’s new Director of Public Information and Publications, began her new position on Monday, February 21. Ms. Brooks, a native of Winston-Salem, received her B.A. in English cum laude from Lenior Rhyne College in Hickory. She also holds a master’s degree in education from Wake Forest and an MBA A ’56 Cadillac provides the perfect background for the “Skivs,” a fifties-style group of the United States Naval Academy Glee Club. With two other specialty groups - a barbershop quartet and folk trio - the Glee Club has a repertoire designed to appeal to all age levels and a variety of musical tastes. The club will perform in Hanes Auditorium on March 6 at 8:15 p.m. Little Theatre Play Auditions Scheduled Auditions for “Velveeta and the Froglevel Rip- staver”, a new Appalachian musical by Bill Stevens, will be held Monday, February 28 at 7:00 p.m. in the Arts Council Theater on Coliseum Drive. Three females will be needed for the parts: a soprano, an alto, and a soprano with a strong low range to be double-cast as two characters. All three roles require dancing or strong movement. All auditioners should prepare a song and a comic monologue one to two minutes in length. An ac companist will be provided. Please call ahead for assigned audition times. ‘Velveeta and the Froglevel Ripstaver” will be a professional production lasting throughout the summer. The show will open in Winston-Salem, tour in July, and open off-Broadway late in the summer for a limited run. Ms. Brooks has previously worked at Ohio State, where she was a residence hall director in a coed dorm housing ap proximately 1900 students. SGA Happenings The decision to combine Big Four, SAC, and April Arts did not pass at the February 22nd SGA meeting. The clubs, after the proposed union, would have been called CAC; Campus Activities Council. The merged organizations could be operated as subgroups under this main group using the same responsibilities outlined in the handbook for Big Four, SAC, and April Arts. The purpose for con solidating these clubs was to promote campus par ticipation, thereby relieving Lighter Side - - others of great respon sibilities, and enabling Executive Finance to distribute funds accordingly. The recall procedure amendment, used to remove a negligent officer from her position passed at the February 8th S.G.A. meeting. The recall procedure amendment now reads that one student, randomly chosen from each class will review the charges presented against a negligent officer. Appeals will then be reviewed by the Honor Council Appeals Board, the Dean of Students, and President Litzenburg. offers double encouragement. Finally, the most faithfully- appearing piece of mail is the hometown church bulletin - every Tuesday you can count on it being there. What we mail from the post office is often more in teresting than what we receive. Think how many job applications. Dear John letters, and notes to the folks at home have been sent over the years ... On the darker side, think how many checks (some rubber) have been sent to Ma Bell, MasterCard, and the infamous City Revenue Collector! Tuition would be $100.00 if students had given that money to Salem instead.
