Return Of The Meter Maid
parking still a problem?
Parking at Salem Col
lege is definitely a pro
blem. Every year the
situation seems to get
worse instead of getting
better.
This year students arriv
ed on campus to find many
new fire lanes and two-
hour parking signs lining
Church Street. With these
signs came the ever-fated
meter maid and her in
famous tickets.
Almost all Salem
students comply with the
fire lane parking.
However, two hour park
ing along Chruch Street,
as sophomore Britt
Raiford said, “It’s
ridiculous; a joke.” Lee
Sears added this com
ment, “The buildings tha
tline Chruch Street are
Main . Hall, South Dorm,
Sisters Dorm, Babcock
Dorm, Gramley Dorm, the
Admissions building, and
Gramley Library. Why
should anyone but a
teacher, student, date,
parent, or pizza delivery
car want to park there?”
The answer to the ques
tion of why there is two
hour parking along Church
Street now is this: Old
Salem has mistakenly
altered parking facilities
and is currently in the pro
cess of correcting the
situation. But in the mean
time, the general feeling
across the Salem campus
is that we should not be the
victims of Old Salem’s er
ror.
One should also note that
two dollar tickets are be
ing increased to $5, and $5
tickets are being increas
ed to $10. The traffic of
ficer will also be ticketing
24 hours a day and on
weekends.
Junior Janie Ratcliffe
summed the parking situa
tion up best by saying,
“It’s times like this I’m
glad I’m a pedestrian.”

to getting to know the
students in my classes.”
However, Mr. Guerin felt
that there is somewhat of a
standoff between students
and faculty members at
this time. He feels this is
common for now and will
“lighten up” as classes
continue.
Besides Sociology, Mr.
Guerin has various other
things occupying his time.
Some of his hobbies in

Passing Time At Salem
This year’s Fall Fest
theme is “Passing Time at
Salem.” Fall Fest, slated
for September 26th this
year will highlight dif
ferent decades of Salem’s
history.
Originally, this special
holiday for Salem students
was a somber celebration
called Founder’s Day. As
time passed, however, it
soon became a festival
promoting the sisterhood
of Salem, and especially
promoting class unity. For
the freshmen, this is their
first opportunity to unite
as a class. In the spring of
1979, the name was chang
ed from Founder’s Day to
Fall Fest.
In addition to sisterhood
and class unity, there is
good-natured competition
between classes. The win
ners of the competition
(traditionally the seniors),
are judged on decorations,
costumes, entrance,
games, and skits.
