The Salemite April 1986, Page 5 The Lighter Side Sophomores Shine In "A Chorus Line By; Laney Frick A dark, empty stage is suddenly filled with numerous bodies being contorted into what looks like stretching exercises and nervous tension. As the lights come up, a dance class is revealed; all the girls in the class are dressed in sweat pants, leotards and tights. The director (known only as the voice of Catherine Penry) quickly chooses 10 girls from the lot and asks to get to know each finalist a little better. Isn't it coincidental that all 10 finalists are Salem (sophomore) seniors? Not at all. For what is about to take place is the annual Sophomore-Senior banquet. As the skit progresses, each finalist gives her credentials (which range from a major in intramurals to one in dance and finally to a math-bio-physics-English major!) Next each finalist sings about her experiences at Salem. Robin (Pat Palumbo)—a knee brace-clad intramurals major claims "1 Can Do That". Sheila (Sally Aman)—a soc major who minored in boys and parties—faces maturity with "Hello 19, Hello 20, and Hello Fun!". And Celia (Blaine Isley)—a CE English major—carries on and on about her family (. . .until the director has heard enough). The scenario of solos continues until Cassie (Rosemary Finger)—soc major—confesses her knowledge of "Music and the People" while the instructor (Kelly Zappa) does an elegant! dance solo in the back ground. The real showstopper comes as DeDe (Krissie Hein)—a self-designed dance major—gives her "Tips to Pass" in the academic world. In the finale, the director cannot exclude any of the well-qualified finalists; so each Salem (sopho more) senior gets the job on "A Chorus Line". The Sophomore-Senior ban quet was a bit different from those of recent years. Dean Johnson says this banquet was produced the way the Sophomore-Senior banquet was originally intended to be done—to provide an entertaining tribute to the senior class and the community, by the sophomore class. In past years, the banquet had become embarassingly over personalized and excluded many of the guests. The Sophomore class was given a set of guidelines to direct their efforts at producing the banquet this year. The guidelines were drawn up by last year's class presidents and other student and faculty representatives. Since the banquet was produced toward the senior class, the sophomores held a special pre sentation for their big sisters at a party in the Student Center afterwards. Hannah Haigh, Pat Palumbo, Sally Aman and Amy Pridgen wrote and read a personalized poem to the senior _ class there. In return, the seniors provided a keg of beer for the party. The gathering in the Student Center turned out to be a pre-party for the big celebration at Corbins Wayne puts on the ritz for Sophomore-Senior Banquet. later that night. CE students Betty Wagoner, Linda Jones, Linda Tilley, Judy Thompson and Elizabeth Johnson enjoyed their inclusion in this year's Sopho more-Senior banquet so much that they also joined the fun at Corbins. Sophomore-Senior exemplified every ideal of sisterhood and fun this year. The skit was tastefully done, the meal was excellent, and the audience behaved in a ff responsible and courteous man ner. All of these positive aspects had not been portrayed in recent years. The sophomores definitely deserve to be highly commended for their efforts on a job well done. \ LOS \ AMIGOS MEXICAN RESTAURANT WE ALSO CATER.
