Archrivals Meet Head On
The dates are April 16 and April
21. The events will be monument
al. On these days, Salem's soccer
team will meet archrival Wake
Forest in matches destined to go
down in history.
Salem's opponents include
Davidson College, Duke Univer
sity, and the UNC-CH club team;
none of these matches, however, is
packed with the intensity of a
Wake Forest encounter.
Lois Gramley, co-captain and
third year player sees the rivalry
this way: "Wake Forest is the
closest and most familiar team we
By. Tate Renner
play, so it is our most competitive.
Their team is about as old as ours and
their skills are comparable, so it is
always a good game." Of all the
games we play, these against Wake
Forest are the standards by which
we measure our success as a team.
Salem has played Wake Forest
since the inception of our team in
the fall of 1983. Dr. Doug
Cardwell, coach of the soccer
team, remarks, "Most seasons we
have split the number of wins and
losses. Last spring, though, was the
only time we didn't. Then, we tied
one and won one." He adds, "Wake
Forest has a tough team. We're
going to have to play our best to
beat them."
The February 26 game was
postponed because of inclement
weather, but it has been reschedul
ed for April 16 here at Salem. We
play again on April 21 at Wake
Forest on the fields off Polo Road.
Lois Gramley adds, 'The games
against Wake Forest bring out the
most determination in our play
ers." So, if you want to see a battle
of wills, make plans to attend the
games of the years. Both games
begin at 4:00 p.m. sharp.
Tennis Team Takes Off
The Salem College tennis team
is already off to a great season.
They successfully played Belmont
Abbey College on March 5 with a
5-4 victory.
Ellen McEwen is coaching the
tennis team for the first time.
Despite the fact that the team is
quite young (the majority of the
players are freshmen and sopho
mores), McEwen is optimistic
about the season. The girls are
hardworking and dedicated to the
By, Maty Summers
sport," she says. "I've got a great
bunch of kids out there."
One thing that the team does not
lack is enthusiasm. Sophomore
Sally Aman says, 'The team has an
unbeatable spirit, win or lose, we
are a great team."
Junior Sarah Gregory returns
this year along with sophomore
Margaret Mays and a talented new
freshman, Leslie Bromley. As of
now, these three women hold the
top three positions. But the team's
talent goes on. . .other members
include Bekah Little, Barbara
Stang, Paige Wagner, Francis
Patteson, Molly Quisenberry,
Sally Aman, Tara Monaghan,
Nanette de Groot, Mary Sum
mers, Catherine Penry, and Stacy
Little. Charlotte Daves, who was
sidelined at the beginning of the
season, is now the team's manager.
Coach McEwen encourages
everyone to come out and support
one of Salem's winningest teams.
Reach for Regionals
By Laney Frick
The Equestrian Team began this
semester with much enthusiasm as
many members doubled-up on
their riding lessons each week to
get back in shape for the spring
semester's horse shows.
At the same time, however,
academic classes were very
demanding on these same stu
dents. Therefore, only four riders
were able to compete at the
Southern Seminary show on Feb.
20, and only five riders were able to
compete at the Hollins College
show on Feb. 28. All of Salem's
riders did well at each of these
shows despite the favoritism of the
judge at one show and the team's
knack for drawing tough horses at
the other.
There is one regular season
show left this semester: April 11 at
Ferrum College. For those riders
who qualify, the Regional horse
show will be held April 15 at
Southern Sem. Salem hopes to
have several riders going to the
Regionals; the Regionals act as a
stepping-stone to qualifying for
the National Horse Show. The
Nationals will be held this year at
the Barracks in Charlottesville,
Virginia on May 3-5. Salem
currently has only one rider
qualified for Regionals, but several
others need only a few more points
to do so.
